Me and the Future Mrs. Mansh17 are going to DPS for our honeymoon in November. On our way home we are going to spend 2 days in SIN. Several questions....
1) St. Regis v. Marriott thoughts?
2) Best vegetarian food? My fiancee is a vegetarian (no meat or fish) and I want to show her the best food in town.
3) Best non veggie food? While she may be veggie - I am not and want to try the best food in town.
4) Good night safaris...
5) What is a must do in 2 days.
Thanks,
Mr and the Future Mrs. Mansh17
Hello and congrats on the impending nuptials!
Some suggestions to aid your research....
1) St. Regis v. Marriott thoughts?
St Regis - Newer, bigger, fancier and i believe you'll get a nicer experience.
2) Best vegetarian food? My fiancee is a vegetarian (no meat or fish) and I want to show her the best food in town.
1. Original Sin (Meditaranean style vegetarian option)
2. Ling Zhi (upscale Chinese vegetarian restaurant)
3. Veganburg, (fast food) Only worth the trip if you're already in the east area
3) Best non veggie food? While she may be veggie - I am not and want to try the best food in town.
oh where do i even start! perhaps you might want to share more about your preferences. I'd recommend our street food or you can always go for the quintessential dishes such as Chilli Crab (from Long Beach Seafood Restaurant) or Chicken Rice.
4) Good night safaris...
We only have 1 night safari. it's pretty good but i personally think it's worth a miss if time is limited. i'd suggest you take the flyer or walk around the Marina Bay Sands and have a good dinner in that vicinity.
5) What is a must do in 2 days.
eat, check out the National Museum or Peranakan Museum, check out the Integrated Resorts (ie. Marina Bay Sands), eat and shop.

4. I will add Komala Vilas (Little India). Run down, Indian style vegetarian. Go for breakfast around 7AM. Nice.

3)Our street food is not what you will find anywhere else in the world, alright perhaps Malaysia. They are our Hawker centres and coffee shops. Check out the Newton Food centre or Lau Pa Sat.
5)Adding on the list, Orchard Road but since you are considering marriott and St Regis which both are in Orchard, you are there.
You may also want to head to City Hall, Sentosa. I think these are the musts.
May I emphasise what a missed opportunity it would be if you didn't explore Singapores street / hawker food.
Some background which it takes newbies sometime to understand.
1. Singapore food offers genuine fusion food as well as genuine food representing the seperate cultures. The fusion food is not because a clever chef decided to experiment in a flash restaurant with flavours from different cultures but because people from different cultures descended over time to Singapore as a trading port and they assimilated, tried each others food and then stole bits off of each others cuisine and made new ones! Real fusion food. So if you like Chinese food .... like Indian food .... and can't choose ... you could well find it in a single Singapore dish developed by people like you who couldn't decide. But you will also find the distinct foods as well. Make sure you read about Peranakan food before you arrive.
2. Many of the hawkers stalls specialise and are known for a single dish which they prepare day in and day out. Because they don't have long menus they are very good at the limited range or sometimes single dish that they prepare.
3. Many of these hawkers have been preparing the same dish or dishes for generations in locations they have been at for generations and the methods handed from parent to children. Sometimes family members open up competing stalls next door .....
4. Because the dishes are so cheap you can buy them and try them without worrying about the cost. I pruposefully choose stuff I think I might not like, to simply try a mouthfull. Most of the time I experience something I haven't tried before and thoroughly enjoy it. Singapore will extend your known food enjoyment range ...
5. For Western sensitivities re hygene etc other places - Bangkok for example may offer photogenic street food opportunities but may seem less clean to us softy Westerners. Singapore has a fairly stringent inspection programme where hawkers are rated for their hygene. So you know that your food should be safe.
6. Singapore residents are passionate about their street food and they often travel across town to visit their favourite places. Many write extensive bloggs with reveiews to give you a starting point. On a two day visit the simplest approach is to go to a large center, wander around to see what takes your fancy and then use the length of queue to decide which places are the best.
7. When eating in the hawker centers you'll be seated alongside Singapore people and you will find them interested to talk to you, delightful to meet, and helpful with your food choices and are a key part of the Singapore experience which to an extent restaurants immunise you from.
8. Hawker centers are ideal for a veggie eating with a carnivore because each of you chooses what you want from what you can see being prepared. You just wander and choose and come back to your table or they bring it. Most restaurants don't let you see before you buy ......
I travel to Singapore for a week at a time, several times a year and my main purpose is to explore and learn about Singapore street food so I can improve my cooking performance back home.
Missing Singapore's street food in favour of restaurants in my view would be a tragedy.
Enjoy your time in Singapore ..... it's more than just a stopover (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/singapore/1068398-way-singapore-not-just-stopover.html) .........;)

As uk1 stated that Singaporeans are passionate about our food,
I can tell you how crazy my friends and I were.
I stay at Jurong the west of Singapore, we travel to Bedok to the east for a bowl of minced pork noodles and head back home.
