Good morning everyone,
I will need a rental car (ideally from the airport at LAX) from 8/14 - 8/20/11 and am hoping someone here had codes/coupons/AWD numbers that may help me out. Am flying in on CO and have some status with Avis and Hertz so great deals there (with my added status) would be ideal. Was hoping to be able to stay between 200-300/week, not in need of any of the extras/insurances, etc.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to help out!

On average priceline or hotwire will give you the best deal if your plans are firm.
There are codes/coupons listed on car rental subforums - start with those and post the results to have some reference point.

Well, by using 'PAY NOW', in conjunction with this offer: \

...it would seem that my 6 day rental will cost ~210 with taxes and fees - any way I could beat or at least match this for Avis/Hertz (where I have status and may be able to score an upgrade)?
Thanks!

https://www.budget.com/budgetWeb/html/en/partners/partners/hilton6500.html seems to be the best deal - $210 for a full size for 6 days. Am trying to find a match (or better) for Avis/Hertz...
I assume you know that for most Hotwire and Priceline deals you need to pay in advance and don't know the name of the company until you pay (Hotwire, at least, has a few rentals where you know the company in advance). I haven't found that great of deals there for my rentals, but you may do better. I've done better (and been able to not pay in advance) using discounts from frequent flyer programs from American, Delta and Alaska (never been asked to show proof of membership), as well as discount codes from Costco, AARP, USAA (insurance) and others. One friend got a good deal last December from the Southwest Airlines Web site, but I couldn't match it for myself later on. Cruisecritic.com has branches devoted to various rental car companies with posts giving discount codes. It appears you've already discovered that many rental companies give slight discounts if you pay in advance. It looks like you found a decent discount from Hilton. For 3 rentals on an upcoming trip, I'm using Budget with a Costco discount once, and Enterprise with Costco discounts twice. In general, the discounts from Costco and AARP were equal or very close.
Budget and Avis are in the same corporation, but generally (not always), I've found Avis to have higher prices than Budget.

Sorry...are you saying Budget and Avis are under the same umbrella? Does that mean my Avis status could help me with Budget?

It's called the Avis Budget Group. I don't remember who bought who. I saw news reports earlier this year regarding its proposed takeover of the Dollar Thrifty group, but don't how that turned out. I've not seen anything in the news or on the companies' Web sites regarding any links between frequent renter programs of Avis and Budget. I think you'd have to contact Budget, by phone or e-mail.

Avis Budget Dollar Thrifty? Are you saying there's only one rental car company now besides Hertz?

This is a great deal considering busy summer travel months. I doubt you'll find anything meaningfully cheaper at LAX since you'll have $50-70+ in airport taxes and fees. With firm plans I would grab it while available. Check their upsells once you get there - perhaps for another $50 you can get smth more interesting.

How does priceline/hotwire work re.insurance? New to renting, and if doing so through third parties such as ebookers it appears CDW is included sometimes however if booked through the rental agency direct it is always an optional extra.
From the UK and looking for a 15 day standard/full size SUV rental from the 20th, keen to consider priceline or hotwire but not really sure how it works.
Already hold a reservation through autoslash.com who seem to be doing a good job in reducing the price so far, although I have still found cheaper at present 'i think'.

The CDW is an optional extra for which you can pay when you pick up your rental.

I justed rented a minivan through LAX.. cheapest quote I got was through Costco for $1,150 all in for an 11 day rental..
Then used www.autoslash.com and got a rate of $682 approx.. Just make a reservaton.. and the website will continually check the rates for you and rebook you to the lowest price until you arrive.. between multiple companies..
