My wife and I will be in Curacao for a week in August. Most of the time we will be at the Hyatt. However, we will want to go to restaurants on the island and do some touring. And of course we will need to travel to and from the airport.

Should we rent a car or use taxis?

When my family and I went there we only relied on taxis and shuttles (went to a conference) which was ok because everything was organised for us. However, if there were no prior arrangements for sight seeing and transport then we would have rented a car.

Curacao has a lot of beautiful beaches for which you need to have a car really. Taking a taxi won't be cheap since the distances are rather large.

We rented a car and it was the best decision we made. You're very isolated at the Hyatt (which can be a good thing), but really miss out on a lot of the island and off the beaten path stuff by not having a car. Taxis to/from the hotel really add up after a couple trips. Hertz had pretty good rates the last time I checked.

Enjoy your trip!

Absolutely rent the car. We rented from Alamo and they gave us a card with directions to the Hyatt. Without those instructions, we would have been driving for a long time. Fortunately we arrived in Curacao in the daylight. Trying to do it at night would be very difficult as street signs although they do exist at some intersections, they may be only on one corner and only printed on one side.

Look at reviews in TA as many have discussed renting a car and remoteness of the resort. The Hyatt Regency Curacao is likely the best resort on the island. Enjoy your trip.

We also rented a car. Went out for part of everyday and enjoyed exploring the island. Enjoy!

As this is not a Hyatt specific thread, I am moving it to a more appropriate location.

We rented a car and did a tour around the island visiting as many different beaches as possible getting out of the city. I would recommend Westpunt area, Playa Portomari and then in the south, Jan Thiel Beach (mostly Dutch).

I liked Playa Portomari the best, my wife like Jan Thiel better.

Cheers.
