Alitalia MilleMiglia - AZ award booking in Business class

Has anyone any experience with award bookings in business class.
I have some miles in my AZ accounts. I was looking for one-way business award availability from LAX - FCO or vice-versa on AZ, but couldnt find anything from August to October.
Is this normal. does AZ release seats for their standard rates?
Other option could be that I buy the AZ ticket and upgrade with miles - but there are no guarantees I would get the upgrade. I couldnt find any thread on FT which presents any positive/negative experience about upgrades with miles. I dont want to invest in an expensive ticket and get stuck with AZ.
Any insights from AZ regulars.

In this seson, is quite hard to found a free seats in J with AZ; unfortunately AZ reserve only 2 J seats each flights.
The only way is to buy a eco tkt, and try to geet an upgrade into the airport with the miles (or trough call center)
Good luck ;)

I dont mind this at all. But I was trying to buy Y,B,H,M class booking codes, but its almost impossible. how do i specify these codes on AZ website.
Does AZ really look at the booking classes when processing mile upgrades?
Any experience on this

Just flown one (to JFK). It takes a bit of flexibility to find one.

DO NOT - LOOK - AT THE WEBSITE.
The ONLY way to book awards is to CALL THE CALL CENTER.
They will look with you at suitable dates.

Actually, you can do that very safely.
You need to check, with your travel agent or through the call center itself, that there is a seat in I class available on the same flight. Then buy the ticket and request the upgrade, it will be confirmed immediately.
Remember you need a ticket at least in H class (or M, B, Y) to do this.
And, no, there's no way to book in a certain specific class through the website. Do yourself a favor and call +39 06 2222. It's cheap through skype.

thanks raistlin,
so all is not as bad as it seems. i thought AZ miles are wasted. I will call the call center and see what they can do.
but the problem is that Y,B,H,M fare are quite expensive - but if i can upgrade easily, then its worth it.
Lax - EU is quite a long flight to enjoy business class.

An H fare roundtrip MXP-JFK is around 1400 EUR. Or you can buy a P fare on routes where the classica plus is in use (i.e. not LAX-FCO) and pay half the mileage (MXP-JFK that would be 1650 roundtrip).
Also, since H gives you 150% of the miles, the actual cost in miles is much lower. Since P gives 200%, on most routes you will pay close to nothing in the end.
Actually, I am finding these upgrades to be pretty handy, I've been upgrading most of my trips in the last year, and the final expense in miles was not so high.
