Mid-Atlantic - What's going on in Pittsburgh next week? Every hotel is sold out

Trying to book a couple of nights for a business trip next (M-W) and almost every hotel within 10 miles of downtown is sold out. The only ones I found in our corp search engine that are available are a Motel 6, a few comfort/days inns, and a couple others I can't recall. Needless to say, I'm probably going to stay in a suburb called monroeville at the doubletree, about 11 miles from where I need to be. The closest Marriott is the Airport Marriott, and there is a Crowne Plaza about 13 miles away from downtown that is also available.
Or is Pittsburgh just that popular?

The new Batman movie is being filmed. Plus it's the "busy" season (that's what we were told). Just be aware that if you are staying in Monroeville, the drive into Pittsburgh in the morning has a ton of traffic. Heck so does the drive from the airport.

I think most of it is probably from the new Batman movie that's filming. I'll caution that if you are staying in Monroeville heading into downtown during the morning rush hour, and back to the hotel during the evening rush hour will be rather crazy. You'll hit tons of traffic, in part because people in PIT seem to feel it is necessary to always creep through tunnels and slam on their brakes while in tunnels.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm partial to the doubletree right now because I recently signed up for the HH gold offer and I need to round out my 3 stays, but would staying at the airport Marriott be any better to get to the university center (near Pitt and CMU)? Other option is to do 2 different hotels if I can find something reasonable.
Also, will I get to see any filming if I go downtown??? That'd be cool. Saw a little of it when they were filming Transformers in Chicago.

I don't know anything about the industry, but could there really be more than couple hundred people on a film crew?

Well, I just talked to my admin about an hour ago. She called a few hotels who told her there are several conferences in town, which are filling up several area hotels, as well as the batman production downtown (I'm sure there are a bunch of "industry" people along with actual crews). Still, seems a bit crazy.

If you need to get to university center, you could head through Wilkinsburg, rather than taking the Parkway the whole way.
As far as filming, I don't know exactly where they will be filming, but there's a chance you might. You might ask at the hotel as they might know more.

So just an update on my trip to PIT. Apparently, there was a U2 concert at Heinz field on Tuesday night, which filled up the hotels Monday (people getting into town the day before the concert) and Tuesday (people staying overnight after the concert). This explains the dearth of rooms!
Anyway, I did end up going through Wilkinsburg. A bit of a rundown area, but not a bad drive at all. Avoided all the traffic on 376 through the tunnel and running south of the city. Thanks for all the suggestions!

I forgot about the U2 concert. I think it was their last show of the tour, at least in the US.
Glad you were able to avoid the tunnel traffic as it can be horrible.
