Not to discourage anyone, but...

I was just there for a conference. It's pretty lackluster.

Quite a few unprofessional interactions with their staff. No one seemed empowered to do anything. Rooms decorated in sort of a gangster motif and very rough around the edges... literally - there was duct tape around the edges of the glass tabletops. And this was in an upgraded Summit room.

It's also not close to anything else, the food was just ok (except the good sushi restaurant), and the casino floor was mostly dead.

I would definitely stay there for free or, say, a $40 priceline bid. But it's certainly no luxury experience. Tho one side of the hotel has great views of the airport, if you're into that.

Also note the $10 daily resort fee:
"$10 daily resort fee allows you access to our health club, valet parking, airport shuttle to the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, free local phone calls, wireless internet and 2 bottles of water."

If you do go, skip Charlie Palmer's SteakHouse. High prices and the food was mediocre, at best. Waitpeople tried to be nice but were clueless about the food.

Thank you, BEAV!

I booked this hotel a few days ago for my sister using the Expedia Facebook promo at $181 all in, including the $150 gift card. With the free nights promo, her all in total is $100 or $33/nt. ^

BTW, the reason she wanted this hotel is because of the kids club activity features.

I haven't stayed there in maybe 2 years, but I thought the 'Summit' rooms rocked. Ceilings were a little low, but not much they could do about that. wj

Nice find ^ expecially as Harrah's stopped sending me free room offers some time ago. Ended up booking 2 rooms in December, with any luck there will be snow on the slopes in Tahoe. If not, it's a cheap $25 option, kind of like my $28 room in Zurich. ;)

Booked for 2 nights stay in last week of October. Can't beat FREE. No taxes or resort fee to pay and if you change mine, all you lose is $25 deposit.

The offer has language about dinner for 75 per person. this is not required to get the deal on the room?

I wondered the same thing when I originally viewed the ad. But nowhere in the terms/conditions does it state any requirement of having to dine at Charlie Palmer's. It's merely a way of advertising the restaurant within the free hotel promo.

There is a shuttle (usually pretty full - I split a taxi rather than fight the minions waiting) and there's nothing really a walkable distance.

The hotel is Reno's largest, has a 24 hour bowling alley, a Roundtable Pizza lunch buffet and movie theater. The fitness center was adequate and included a sauna and steam room.

With Starbucks in the lobby as well, I did not need much reason to leave. However, if you do there is a Wal-Mart across the vast parking lot from sports book exit.

Most of the casinos here are still downtown (Harrahs, El Dorado, Silver Legacy, Circus Circus, Cal-Neva, with some smaller places on side streets--Sands and Siena), with some further out on Virgina Street about 2-3 miles (Peppermill, Atlantis) and in Sparks (Nugget). None of those are within walking distance of the Grand Sierra.

There have been some cutbacks due to the economy. The Nugget in Sparks does not have a buffet Monday-Wednesday. It was my favorite up there for many years. The Silver Legacy does not have a buffet on Monday or Tuesday. When I was up at the Grand Sierra about 2 months ago, during the week, their buffet was also closed, and looking at their website they're down to just dinner now Wednesday-Sunday. My current favorite is the El Dorado downtown. They even have a gelato bar (plus killer desserts).

You might be able to get a bus from one of the major side streets around the Grand Sierra to get downtown (Mills to the south and East 2nd Street, which does go all the way downtown, to the north).

Reno Transit (RTC) has bus #14 that stops at Grand Sierra's doorstep. It runs from about 0530 till very late. Takes you to the main downtown transit center (2 blocks from Virginia St). An all day pass is $5 (or $4 if purchased from a kiosk machine).

Several years ago, I took the free shuttle to the airport and then another free airport shuttle to Silver Legacy downtown...but I agree, the bus is a time saver.
