California - Channel Islands Natl. Park trip: sea conditions
I've been to Anacapa twice and Santa Barbara Island once but it's been many years, and haven't been in August before. My last trip was to Santa Barbar island almost 20 years ago. Next month my wife and I are considering a day trip out to Santa Cruz Island. Any experiences with summer trips there re sea conditions (I do suffer from seasickness at times, though would certainly take Dramamine or equivalent)? No trips to Anacapa the day we plan on going. It's only an hour each say to SC (much shorter, and with less open sea exposure than to Santa Barbara Island; a bit more than going to Anacapa). I do realize that conditions vary from day to day but just curious about any experiences. Looks like a full-day trip, but most of the time is spent onthe island. My wife is a little concerned with sun exposure (she had Lupus as a teenager and says prolonged exposure to sunlight can be bad for her; she is a physician). Thanks!
In my experience it's a total hit or miss on any small storm or wind shaking things up but generally summer is pretty calm on my channel island trips. Assuming Check the wind conditions leading up to the trip... if it gets gusty the waves will chop.
Having a day as downtime between the return helps as you calm down any nerves but as it gets later in the day and cools off, the tides shift and water can pick up.
Boat size can help a lot too in bringing stability and increasing the size of the center of gravity although they also push into waves more than going over them.

It's been years since I've done this, but my experience, too, was hit or miss. I was scuba diving and so road on relatively small boats. When the water was rough, it was definitely a stomach churner (though, happily, I don't get seasick). Other times, it was smooth as glass (well, slightly choppy glass).

Off topic: Once jumped in the water sans fins just to get out of that "choppy" feeling. Quite embarrassing to ask for them. :D
Thanks. Now looking at a morning trip to Anacapa. Supposed to be back mid-day.
