Hilton HHonors - AIRLINE MILES AND CAR RENTAL BONUSES

This is a really stupid question - however, I am really curious about something.
When I review my HHonors detail account activity on-line, I see I am supposedly getting my American Airlines miles. Although American's track record at posting these to my account has been terrible.
I also noticed for the 1st time tonight that it looks like one can also present a car rental ID (i.e. AVIS Preferred) to obtain addtl. HHonors points.
Has anyone tried this - does this work? What do I do at check-in?

HHonors has had this for some time, When you check in, mention that you have a car rental from one of the HHonors partners, and you should get bonus points from Hilton in your account. You may have to show your rental agreement at the time, although I've never been asked to show it. Also request additional airline bonus points at check-in, by asking them to put in an airline code (in your case "AA") next to the AB (for airline bonus) section in the computer with your reservation. The section for entering the car rental code on their screen is "CR", and they can put in the code for Avis for you.
Stayed at a Hilton in Fort Lauderdale two weeks ago, and got all the bonuses and points already posted to my Air Canada and Hilton accounts---11,566 to HHonors for a five day stay. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

'Tis better to have played and won, then never to have played at all.
With Avis rentals, you have to specify HHonors as the loyalty programme on the car rental agreement, i.e. choose between airline miles and HHonors points. Can't get the Avis credit at hotel checkin.
For me, airline miles are better value - Virgin = 1,000 miles, 2000 miles when Double Dipped - so I don't bother with a measly 250 HHonors points for Avis rentals.
I understand that with Hertz (online at least), you can choose miles AND HHonors points.
Important caveat: it seems that very few front desk people really understand all the HHonors small print, so there will be numerous exceptions!

Just to clarify above post, the 1,000/2,000 Virgin miles are for the Hilton stay.
The car rental is normally also worth 1,000 Virgin miles.
