I just got my Gold card via the promotion code that was mentioned on this board--so thanks for that. I will be staying in DC at the Captial Hilton soon. If I get the room through Travelocity or Expedia, will I have any problems gettting an upgrade at the hotel? Thanks

You won't have a problem by using a travel agent, but I would call Hilton to make sure your HHonors number is on the reservation. At some hotels you need to ask for an upgrade.

I would be surprised if you get a true upgrade (to a suite for example) even if you ask. The gold elite level is not what it used to be, and all of the chains have gotten stingier with upgrades. At the desk, they may even comment on the rate: "this rate is too low to qualify for an upgrade"

Marriott's mid tier (gold, formerly black) sometimes doesn't even get you the amenities spelled out in the membership agreement, like VIP lounge access.

Just stayed this past weekend at the Capital
Hilton. I have no status with Hilton. The
Hotel is great. Having no status I booked
two Club rooms. At check in one was upgarded
to junior suite on 14th floor (highest). It
was a pleasant surprise. Club on 10th floor.
Front desk is very helpful.
