Singapore - Do Singapore laws bother travellers?

They will execute you for possessing marijuana. Singapore also has anti-gay laws. Even coca-cola is banned there.
They also cane you for chewing gums or not flushing after using the toilet, like they did to that american kid.
For such a modern city the laws are very backwards. Will this affect anyone from visiting?

Nope. You will be fine. I chew gum here; refrain from depositing it on the ground, under tables, etc.

Yeah... apart from the anti-gay laws (not cool) I'm not really sure how the rest of the laws are a problem. Marijuana is illegal. Not flushing the toilet is disgusting. Chewing gum and depositing it on the street is inconvenient and selfish.
If you are going to do any of those things then better off NOT having that type of tourist in Singapore.

These things don't bother me.
There are plenty of chaotic and more flexible countries nearby.
I do wish the cost of living wasn't so high !
I need to wait for another hotel "deal"
before I can affordably enjoy more than a few days there.. :D

They don't bother me at all. I quite like some of the laws there, actually.
I would not bother answering this OP. He has a habit of launching a question in a forum and not participating in the discussion.
Maybe he gets some kind of kick out of seeing us answering his question... :D

On the balance I find the weight of petty laws in California to be much more bothersome than Singapore.

This depends on how you look at it. If you want to go to Singapore, just deal with it, if not why care at all? We are all guests in the countries we visit and we have to abide by their laws during our visit.

HAHA this is ridonkulous. I would be stoned to death if Coca Cola is banned in Singapore. Anyway, some laws are in place to make the people (consisting of immigrants since way back) more gracious, otherwise the country wouldn't be so clean and safe now. As for gay laws, I believe it will change sooner or later. It's a matter of mindset to the current old generation.

I personally feel that our laws do not bother anyone
As to chewing gums - it is not illegal
As to importing Chewing gums - it is illegal
Not flushing the toilet after used is not illegal too. Just immoral.

I wish coke was banned where I live. And some of the laws in Singapore regarding social relations are not as archaic as those in Alabama or Georgia.

How does one chew something that you can't carry in your pocket when entering the country? Just curious.

Chewing gum of "therapeutic value" is available in pharmacies since 2004.
Before that it was quite common that my Singaporeans friends handed out chewing gums to family members and friends as a small present after they have visited Malaysia.

As far as I know, you are allowed to bring in chewing gum when you enter the country as long as it is a reasonable amount and for personal use only.

If you are talking about drugs, you will be prosecuted as per bringing it in.
If talking about gums, you can bring it in for personal consumption so long you are not importing it for sale.
