I'm trying to arrange a first anniversary stay with my wife in the Caribbean, using Rewards if possible. I'm shooting for May 27 - 31. I attempted the Jalousie Hilton in St Lucia but they claim to have no award rooms, although they do have general availability. Anyone have any hints on how to finagle a reward stay? I have an Hhonors Gold card, although my statement says I'm only Silver (gotta straighten that one out!). Suggestions for other nice resorts in the Caribbean? What about the best place to book a room if I'm going to need to pay?
Thanks much for the help!

If St Lucia is your preference Sandals is terrific, especially if you get one of the hillside rooms with a private plunge pool. Its all inclusive but the food is much beter than the standard all inclusive.

I was able to stay at St Lucia when it first became a Hilton. Unfortunately, it has been imposiblt for me to book an award since then. Ten months in advance, six months, two months or two weeks - they "have no award rooms". This is a nice resort. Very isolated. However, as with many Hilton properties, it is very difficult to redeem an award.

If you are still looking for a Caribbean resort, you may be interested to learn that the Sandy Lane resort in Barbados (www.sandylane.com) re-opened over the weekend after being completely rebuilt over the last few years. The 1000-acre 5* property now sports 3 Tom Fazio golf courses and a state-of-the-art spa. Clearly aimed at the "up-market" crowd rates range between US $1,000 - $5,000 per night. Another popular west coast resort a few miles north of Sandy Lane is the all-inclusive Almond Beach Village (www.almondresorts.com). Rates there range between US $500 - $1,600 per night. Right next door to Almond is the Port St. Charles Resort/Marina (www.marinabarbados.com) with rates ranging between US $180 - $1,085 per night. These are three execellent properties but there are also loads of others (www.barbados2000.com)much more affordable available. Unfortunately, work has not started on the re-construction of the Barbados Hilton which was demolished a few years ago to make way for a bigger/better hotel.

Does anyone out there have any experiences or advice on a couple of Hilton locations in the Caribbean?
I can't get to St. Lucia during Spring Break (at least not on FF miles), so I'm trying to decide between Nassau and Tobago. My short analysis is that Nassau is closer without the connections, but Tobago is only 100,000 per room for 6 nights.
We're taking our young daughters with us around Easter. They're experienced Vacation Stationers from Waikaloa Village, Hawaiian Village and San Diego Mission Bay resorts.
Thanks, in advance.

I have been to cancun a few times and loved it. You now have a couple of choices there now (Hilton and Camino Real - both great places to stay). The water is blue the sand is white the corona's are cold. Lots to do there. St Lucia, nice hotel, not much to do for kids. Cancan, price would be much cheaper than the islands. The ff mile to get to mexico are the same as the islands. I have been to the bahamas a few times, - not as nice as the hotels in cancun, hilton wise. You could also come to my hometown Key West, - great hilton, always fun during spring break

I don't like being stuck at a resort, so IMO the Jalousie Hilton Resort & Spa St Lucia is not the best.
The Hilton Caribe in San Juan PR is my fave Caribbean hotel due to the multitude of other activities in and around the San Juan area.

I also like the Hilton Caribe in San Juan, PR very much, but it's definitely not a resort and very much an urban environment. So if you're looking to get away from it all, there are probably better spots. However, if you're looking to combine city life w/ the sea, it's a good bet. tls

I have a couple additional questions -
1. I'm thinking of booking the Hilton in St. Lucia for my honeymoon, but the only room they have is Smoking. I hate smoking rooms, but if the windows are open it is usually ok. In May, how often do you leave the windows open in St. Lucia?
2. I'm diamond, what is the policy on upgrading?
3. Are there any other non-hilton properties on the island worth looking at?
4. If we get tired of being away, are there any nearby towns worth looking at and how far are they?
Thanks!

It should be a great place for a honeymoon. Smoking rooms weren't a problem. Ceiling fans also.
2. I'm diamond, what is the policy on upgrading?
I went there in September and as a gold received a 2 room villa with a great view (Papaya Patch)upgrade with a bottle of champange as the amenity in lieu of breakfast.

Souferrie is close by by either taxi, water or a good walk. Not much there. Lots of activities off property. You can hire a boat for snorkeling and coastline viewing. Lots of other things to do. Certainly take the helicopter ride to the property - a great way to get there and very spectacular.

I just spent 5 nights at the Trinidad Hilton
Fruit basket and rumcakes gift and Exectutive Suite floor access. Older property...excellent service...It is known as the 'upside-down' hotel...ie. elevator goes from floor 9 -Lobby in reverse! Wonderful grounds..but rooms are very old,Hilton needs more coverage in the islands..still waiting for the Barbados Hilton to be rebuilt. Trinidad rate very good $125/nite + 21% tax.

On the other end of St Lucia is the Hyatt which is a gorgeous new hotel. We liked it even better than the Hilton. I have no idea about the rates but we went when it first opened and it was pretty cheap then with upgrades to Regency. However, the beach has a lot of shells in the water so I recommend beach shoes if you go there. It would give you a chance to see the other end since it takes a while to drive from one end to the other. Car rentals are steep. The Jalousie Hilton is VERY romantic in its setting - great honeymoon hotel.
Is there a Hilton Tobago? I haven't heard about that one at all. We have stayed in Trinidad (no beach) and San Juan (not bad but we liked Hyatt better outside of town).

Watch out for the Hyatt St. Lucia -- they have had severe facilities problems in the past. My company had a function there a while back and the water went out for several days. We had to bathe in either the swimming pool, or using bottles of Evian (which they did provide to us). Other than giving us free bottled water, they were not gracious or generous in rectifying the situation. Book at your own risk!

the hotel insists, by the way, that the lounge is only for those staying on the executive floor and for diamond hhonors members. so, if you're not diamond... or staying on the exec floor, you can pretty much forget about lounge access.

I stayed two nights ago, for one night. Big, and pretty impersonal. Clearly oriented as much, if not more towards business rather than leisure travel. I am gold and checked in on the executive floor (9th floor in main tower) and was given lounge acess to both this lounge and corporate lounge in the main lobby. Watch out for the resort fee $8.80/dy. I called and was told it covered towels, coffee in the room and a local paper (San Juan Star) and they would not take it off even though I was not told of this fee when I reserved or checked in :-( We did get vouchers for complimentary rum drink of our choice though, which were valued at more than the resort fee. Also fairly decent munchies and a very good selection of hard liquors in the lounge, breakfast was better than some that I've had in some exec. lounges too.
Best rate I could get was $220/dy on Orbitz and we got a ground floor room that had a view of the garden, no upgrade because they were at 100% occupancy.

Mar 21, 02, 8:32 am
Looks like Vindesante had an easier time of getting an upgrade than did hubby and I.
We stayed 3/4-3/9 on an award. I'm gold, was told by Gladys at the Hhonors check-in that THIS Hilton only allowed Diamonds on the exec. floor and lounge. (AND that message is posted on the exec. lounge door on the 9th floor). Kindly mentioned that if Caribe was a part of the Hilton chain that the hotel could not pick and choose which benefits to extend to it's members. She wouldn't budge.
We were tired from the flight so we went to our room in the tower building. Room was nice but no nicer than Hampton Inns, large bath w/seperate shower/tub, dressing table, 2 sinks. Balcony overlooking ocean.
Next day I call the front desk manager and he gives me the same spill as Gladys. So, I whip out my copy of member benefits and start to educate him. Told him I thought my tower room was very nice and was not interested in packing up & moving to the exec. floor but I did expect exec. lounge access, which he gave us ONLY after insisting that that benefit was afforded to Diamonds ONLY at the Caribe Hilton.
At 5:30p, hubby & I walk over to 9th floor lounge, gain access with our newly programmed "exec. lounge access" cards when hubby is stopped by a young man dressed in a black suit w/white shirt and black tie informs hubby there is a dress code after 5:30, long pants only. After hubby changes to long pants we settle down in the lounge for drinks, hot meatballs, veggies w/dip, assorted fruit, cheeses, and breads. (Breakfast was cereal, fruits, yogurt, breads, pastries. At 10pm they have dessert and after dinner drinks.)
About 6p along comes bottled blond wearing high dollar resort wear hot pants, maybe dress code applies to men only me thinks! Maybe not, as 2 nights later I enter wearing Liz Claibore khaki shorts and one of Liz's t-shirts, am told there is a dress code after 5:30. Hey, all I want is a diet Coke and bottled water to go, which I grab and run.
IMO,hotel leaned more toward business/corporate traveler than family travelers.
Hotel is a short walk ( a mile?) across bridge to Condado with many fine restaurants/outdoor cafes/casinos and a short cab ($8.00)or bus ride (fifty cents)into Old San Juan where you can get on the free trolley that takes you all over OSJ.
I've seen on biddingfortravel.com where people have gotten rooms here for $75.-$125. per night Jan-Mar, which IMO, is about what these rooms are worth. Enjoyed the trip, loved the country, people were exceptionally nice, rum drinks were tasty, weather was GREAT, traffic horrendous!

Thanks for all the great feedback..I am interested in more if anyone else has been there.

Dear Caribe Hilton Management,
I recently called your reservations # and was told that upgrades are only for "Diamond VIP members" at the Caribe Hilton and this is true for lounge access as well. In reading reviews of your hotel on Flyertalk.com other customers have had this same issue as well.
According to the terms of Gold VIP membership:
http://www.hilton.com/en/hhonors/benefits/levels.jhtml
At US Hilton hotels, and at Conrad and Doubletree hotels with Towers or Executive Levels, Gold VIPs will be provided with a guest room on the Towers or Executive Level floor, whenever possible. In cases when Towers or Executive Level accommodations have been fully booked, Gold VIP members will be offered either (1) the use of the Towers or Executive Level lounge, including complimentary continental breakfast each morning or (2) personalized certificates for each day of the stay for all occupants of the members room valid for complimentary continental breakfast in the hotel coffee shop or all-purpose restaurant.
I have an upcoming stay for two nights on 4/24 and then another night on 4/28 and I want to ensure that I will not encounter any difficulties during my stay at your hotel.
Sincerely,

After reading the replies above about the near impossibility of getting an upgrade at the Caribe Hilton, I thought I'd ask about getting an upgrade in off-season. apart from the problems noted above re: elite recognition/benefits, the caribe hilton simply isn't that great a resort property. i can think of two or three properties in aruba (the radisson, the hyatt, the marriott... even the former hilton, now a wyndham) at which you'd have a much better time with far more reliable weather.
in brief: the caribe hilton is NOT where you should spend your honeymoon!

If you are stating that the Caribe is not a resort (I define resort as a property w/a decent amount of land, it's own large beach and is secluded) than yes I would not recommned the Caribe, IF A TRUE "RESORT" IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR.
But if you are looking for an action packed honeymoon, I could not disagree more, there is passion, soul and nightlife in San Juan that the other islands can't even come close to. There are also a multitude of activities on PR than on most islands. Go for what you want.
The fact that you are going in November would rule out staying at Hurricane belt islands, IMO (which rules out Hiltons in the Caribbean). I would assume that is why UK Stages listed Aruba which seems to be immune from Hurricanes (hurricanes do not seem to thrive in that part of the Caribbean). Aruba however, does not hold a candle to HI.

Catwood, Gladys' reply reads like she is really gonna give you the works...but she is NOT offering you a room on the Executive level floor, which is on the 9th or 6th floor, NOT in the tower, although those rooms IMHO are very nice, at least ours was. Also, she is not giving you access to the Executive floor lounge. What she IS offering is what every Hilton Honors member gets at the Caribe Hilton. We were there is early March and Gladys would NOT budge on giving this GOLD VIP member access to the Executive lounge. She insisted THE CARIBE HILTON only gives Exec. level access to Diamonds, no matter what the HH benefits says. I had to speak with the front desk manager, quoted him the GOLD VIP membership benefits and he STILL did not want to budge, but finally did.
The lounge on the main level has "cocktails" in the form of cheap wine, and assorted meat/cheese/fruit tray, breakfast (if you get there early enough to get anything) is the usual continental fair. Plus, they do not have table and chairs, you can either stand & eat at a tall bar table or you can balance your plate on your lap.
The Exec. level lounge in mucho nicer, table and chairs together, couches, TV, restroom.
Coctails are hard liquor, good wine, champagne, bottled water, canned drinks, hot snacks, fruits, sandwich fixings. There's a dessert/after dinner drinks hour at 10pm. Breakfast is the usual continental fair, plus cereal, assorted breads.
Word of warning: after 5p in the Exec. lounge it's long pants for men and no shorts for women.
When you enter the Caribe, there is a special check in lounge for HHonors members to the right of the main check-in area, behind the 2 screaming parrots... you will probably encounter Gladys here. Take a copy of the GOLD VIP benefits with you and good luck!
If you get to the exec. level lounge, read what's written on the door! **For Executive level guests and Diamonds ONLY**

I just wanted to provide an update on what actually happened.
She stood firm on the executive level access, however she gave us a fabulous room on the 16th floor of the tower. It was beautiful and overlooked the ocean, my friends and I loved it.
Upon arrival she wasn't around as it was 11pm, but the hotel welcomed us to the hotel by sending up a cheese/cracker fruit plate and a small bottle of very good dessert wine. It was a nice touch.
The Hhonors lounge served some great shrimp and mussels the two nights we were around for food. Breakfast was simple pastries and juice in the mornings, but they had a nifty coffee machine too.
Overall, we were pretty pleased, especially after two separate orders of drinks from the bar and pool never made it to our bill, just the tips which was mysterious.

What would you suggest as the best value/trip to the Caribbean for 100k?
Thanks!

Only properties you can get for 100,000 in the Caribbean are:
Hilton Cancun, on beach
Hilton Cabo San Lucas, on beach (will go up to a Premium property as of June 1, 2003)
Hilton Ponce, on beach (s. side of Puerto Rico)
Hilton Tobago, on beach
Hilton Kingston Jamaica is a select, but is not on the beach.
Hilton Trinidad is a select, but is not on a beach (I think)
Hilton Margarita is select and is on the beach
I love all of Puerto Rico, so my vote would be for the Ponce Hilton, but seeing as the Cabo location seems to be misclassified for awhile and has received favorabel reviews I might use the 100,000 there (realizing that Cabo is not in the Caribbean)

The Hilton Trinidad is a very nice hotel but is no where near a beach. It is really a business hotel as Trinidad is not very "touristy" in my opinion.
The Tobago Hilton is on the beach but the beach is pretty unusable. I wrote a trip report about the Trinidad and Tobago Hiltons if you want more info on our trip.

Tne beach at the Ponce Hilton is the pits. A staff member warned us not to swim there as there is a municipal discharge pipe very close. If you do go to Ponce, eat at "Marks" in town. It was excellent.

Hiton Cabo is awesome! Not Caribbean but a nice beach (sometimes choppy waters, good water sports and great accomidations (no executive floor). If you go there be sure to rent a car if you want to go downtown. Forget the bus and cabs run $40.00 r/t to downtown, it's cheaper to rent a car.
Hilton Cancun is also very good; a "sanitized" version of Mexico, not as cultural as other Mexican vacation spots. Good diving, boating and snokerling.
Hilton Nassau is also very nice, equal to or better water activities as Cancun. Located downtown- you can walk to shopping and dining or rent scooters to check out most of the island.
Haven't checked out the other Hilton prop's in the Caribbean (San Juan on 2/27 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
If you list what the most important aspects of the property you wish to visit, perhaps you'll get more detailed information.
Have a great trip!

sdux,
I find almost all Mexican resort areas very sanitized in the sense that most places you go are almost all tourists. It is very hard to mingle w/the local culture. Where have you found it "not so sanitized" in Mexico?

I can't recommend much in the Caribbean mostly because I have had limited experience in this area.
I can say that I have stayed at the Hilton Margarita and I would not recommend it for a family because or the difficulty of getting there as well as the general dirtiness of the island. This place is covered with trash.

Just got back from St. Lucia, and it was fabulous. That being said...it is not a place I would take my kids. Not really much for them to do there, and the beach is not very big. Better place to take your spouse alone.

Hilton is not represented well in the Caribbean.
Cancun would be the most Americanized Hilton to stay at and kid friendly.
Caribe San Juan would be next IMO.
The all inclusive Dominican Republic properties that Hilton is partnering with are not due to come into the system for awards for a few months now, plus word was they are VERY pricey point wise.

Hi all,
I'm looking to take my family on an award stay somewhere in the Caribbean this winter, maybe next spring (good time to plan http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif)
The only reason we're thinking the Caribbean is we haven't seen much of it and we want a beach for little Dudemon. We've done Mexico plenty so we'll skip on Cancun or the other areas there. Though Puerto Rico sounds great I'd rather go non-US just for some variety.
So what would be a fun place to for 6 nights? Or perhaps I should put it "Where would you go?" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'll have to assume that you have not been to PR then? Because besides a US flag flying occasionally, the US greenback in use, some US fast food franchises, there certainly is not much that would lead you to believe that PR has no variety. To me that is one of the joys of PR, it is very different from the US, truly its own entity. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Really depends on what you are looking for. Here's a few thoughts (I assume you are considering just Hilton properties)
Tobago - quiet, tranquil, unspoilt - no shopping
Trinidad - big city, not for beaches and pina-coladas, very nosiy at Carnival time
St Lucia - volcano, hiking, nature
Jamaica - just like on TV, mon
Barbados - pampered and genteel and perfect beaches
...step one is to decide what sort of island you are looking for.
hope this helps

The Hilton Kington (Jamaica) though nice is not where you want to spend your vacation.
It caters mostly to business stayers.
Its located in a busy urban setting but is far way from the beaches and other stuff tourists like to do.

St. Maarten, Aruba and Curacao are nice (in that order). No idea if they have any hiltons (imagine they do), somehow I never look for hiltons as tropical resorts. But I may have to reconsider based on several recent stays at city hiltons, which far exceeded my expectations.

Have stayed at the Marriott in question on Curacao. It has one of my most memorable breathtaking views anywhere in the world as you walk up the steps toward the reception area...you get a portrait in the making, and the same when the sun goes down.
Now having said that, on to the real business here...gambling...I won fairly big at black jack at the Marriott one night, and walked over to the Hilton the next night. Neither casino is big, nor are they anything like Vegas, but they are clean and at least seem to be honestly operated. Not much else on Curacao other than the capitol, which reminded me of Amsterdam, for good reason (it is the Netherlands Antilles).
Worth it for the weekend if you have points/miles to burn...though I did witness an AA plane on the runway with emergency exit slides deployed. No idea what happened. This would have been in 2000-2001.
The white sand beach is amazing, some of my group did go scuba diving, but I preferred the casino and umbrella laden drinks.
Even if you stay at the Hilton, go over to the Marriott just for the view as you walk up the steps from the driveway, both early daytime and at sunset -- and bring a camera.

Tobago did not have a casino.
The Coral Hiltons in the Dominican republic are all inclusive and at least the Hamaca had a small casino attached. I just did a trip report. Didn't include the casino as we really didn't do any gambling. Might be worth looking into if you want to burn some points.

I second Aruba and St. Martin, great islands to visit. I'm not a big gambler but my father in law is. Most casino's in the caribbean are small and not that exciting. And the odds on the slots are not nearly as good as you'll find here in the states. Not sure about table games, but I suspect the Blackjack rules are more in favor of the house too.

There is casino gambling on both islands of Trinidad and Tobago, however these are small operations, if you are looking for Las Vegas scale facilities you'll be dissapointed, and none of the casinos is in a hotel. There are Hiltons on both islands

I've got 250k points saved, and the British Colonial Hilton Nassau takes 35k per night. The problem is, I have 3 kids - so there are 5 of us, and we would like to stay for 5 days. What to do? I'd hate to have to get 2 rooms. The rooms on the web site look big enough - what would the hotel say to 5? Also, has anybody else researched the "family of 5" issue with respect to using Hilton Honors points - especially anywhere in the Caribbean?

I stayed in a huge 3 room suite last year with my family of 5 at the Hilton Coral Bayahibe in the Dominican Republic. The room was wonderful, the food so so, the beach great and a decent acitivities staff for the kids. I wish more Hiltons and more hotels in general would have larger family sized configurations. I am sorry I don't know about Nassau but if it doesn't specifally say I doubt they let you all stay in one room.

The rates usually rise November 15 - December 15 in the Caribbean. Often some very good bargains can be found in November - early December throughout the extended Caribbean area. They seem to be offeirng this double bonus to those who would take a chance on rain, wind and possibly hurricanes.

This is not unusual. On 2 of my last 3 stays there, they had no idea of the promo or promo code I booked under. They would not look it up on the hilton.com site either. Paper copies are always nice for that kind of reason particularly - offers, "guaranteed" upgrades, included meals and taxes, the whole gamut - if you have it printed, they find it a bit harder to arbitrarily deny you or make you fish for compo when you get back from your trip. I've found a paper copy of great help on literally dozens of stays -and if they want to keep it, I always ask them to... make a copy!

I finally got hold of someone at HHonors who was able to locate the plan codes.
EQ if you want the double airline miles
EV if you want the double base points
As far as slow info ... when I checked in they had me listed as a "priceline" stay although I had booked on the Hilton web site. I had stayed on a priceline rate in the past so this just seemed to stay in some part of their computer system.
OTOH, this worked to my advantage once when I had temporarily dropped to Hilton Plat, but their computer system still seemed to have me listed as Diamond.

as for listing you as priceline, its probably b/c they want to be as confusing as AA and the "O" fares..

The winter rates for Barbados are very high over $500 and at times $700 - $800 a night. Curacao is much more reasonable in the $200 range. I recommend that you figure out in more detail what you are looking for, do a search of previous posted comments, and then come back with a more informative question or feedback request. Have you looked into any of the Coral Properties in the Dominican Republic. I don't know what you mean by "best" but the Dominican is certainly a good value. The properties are all-inclusive, they are lots of fun, and the location is beautiful. The hotels are not as luxurious as some other Hilton properties in the Caribbean but they are also much less expensive. Tanya Lewis

Having left the Caribe yesterday musty smell and all, and just checked into the Barbados Hilton there is absolutely no comparison at all.
The latter is less than a year old, there are three white sand beaches -compared to the yellow-brown at the Caribe.
No paying for beach lounge chairs.
More friendly, courtious staff and no waiting 30 mins for you car after paying $20/day to park.
Welcome gift and almost embarassing acknowledgement of Diamond status.
Very nice lounge with free wireless internet.
I just cant think of one thing the Caribe is even close to this place.

Florida is great during the winter...I'm not sure it ever gets COOOOOLD there as mentioned earlier.... it can get a bit cool at night tho...but it's a nice offset to the sunny hot weather during the day. The OP sounds like he's looking for more of a RESORT type hotel. From what I've seen there aren't alot of classic Hilton resorts in FL anymore. The Hilton Sandestin isn't bad...the Gulf is a nice warm body of water...but you don't really get that "resort" feel...it's just too crowded with hotels around the area.
IMHO, only choose Florida if you want to hit the beach. For the resort lifestyle you're better off on one of the caribbean islands.

Hmm lets see, I do believe the high in TPA last week Tuesday ( or was it Monday?)during the day was 45 degrees, about a week earlier it was 52 at noon with a 30 mph north wind = 22 degree wind chill.

Well I think of that as COOOOLD. Unless you are Nanuk of the North, you won't be at the pool or beach.

The Hilton Tobago is a lovely hotel but the beach is totally unusable. There is a major undertow and it is advised that you don't go in the water. The hotel is on the windward side of the island and you will have a constant breeze/wind at the pools. The food is very expensive, a coke from the minibar will cost you at least US$2.50 to $3.00. At the local grocery the same will cost less than 50 cents. The golf course is amazing. You will need a car as the Hilton is set off by itself. Hilton has started selling this to many Europeans with an all-inclusive option so you could find yourself surrrounded by loud, inebriated people a lot of the night.
I loved Tobago but would not stay at the Hilton unless the main reason of going was for the golf course.

MIKESILV,
Can you tell us more about Barbados as you are there. There is a separate thread about this hotel but can you address the beach.
Is the water calm, is there snorkeling? Would six days be too much. Thinking of a GLONP2 and we usually do long weekends.

for sure, is the best Hilton property I've visited in the Caribbean (Nassau, Kingston, San Juan, Ponce, Trinidad, Curacao). St Lucia used to be the best.
But its probably also the most expensive island to be on.
I've not been to Tobago nor the new property in Santo Domingo ether.

it can be COOOOLD in Florida in March or April. Thikk Mexico or the Caribbean. I like the Caribe Hilton, but then I like Puerto Rico and some folks don't.
You'll get the odd day in the 30s or 40s during winter. By March cold is not to be found. Miami and Tampa are in the upper 70s in March. Jacksonville is low 70s.
I stayed at the Barbados Hilton as well and would recommend it highly.

I was there earlier this month Feb 13-15 and the yellow flags were up all the time on the beaches. One of the beaches has so much rock that you cannot even wade in. The better beach has an area that is quite shallow--maybe up to your thighs--but you can go in and not have to avoid coral rocks. I didn't notice any snorkeling going on.
The food is expensive and fine but not great. We had a room on the 8th floor facing the beach and it was nice. You can smell the oil refinery when you are on the walkway between the two towers and also in front of the hotel, but I didn't notice the smell on the beach (thankfully).
The gym is good and all the staff I met were good to great!
We had just spent 10 days in the Grenadines (Bequia and Mustique) in much more spacious rooms and peaceful surroundings, so it was a little hard to come back to earth at a large hotel that caters to business functions and tour groups.

Anyone familiar with the Embassy Suites Hotel San Juan Hotel & Casino?
Not familiar with this one, but the Embassy Suites El Dorado is nice. It is not near much(30-45 minutes from San Juan), but there is a golf course, and a casino near by. They have a nice pool, a decent beach, and it is sort of off the the beaten track. Not to mention, with a 2 year old, you can put them to bed in one room and hang out in the other.
I did not snorkel there, but there are trips offered from the hotel.
One thought would be to do a couple of days there for R&R, and a couple of days at Hilton Caribe to see Old San Juan, and do some more touristy things.

There are lots of warnings about the Hilton Tobago beach on the net. I found no problem with it at all, though. The beach to the right from the hotel is not big, but there were not that many people there. There were kids swimming and I don't recall any warning signs. So I swimmed a couple of times myself when I was there. The Hilton is not one of those big colossal buildings, but a rather nice piece of architecture. I think it is on the front page of the Hilton Worldwide hotel directory.

Marco Island forecast for the next 10 days is mid-high 70's, 58 at night. Not exactly cold. Jan-Feb you can risk cold weather in Florida. It could happen in March, but not likely.
We haven't been to the Hilton on Marco Island but will be there in a few weeks. It's gets good reviews and the beach looks great. However in March the gulf waters will be too cold for nice swimming if that's what you'd like.

I stayed a few months ago at a Hilton in the Caribbean and since then I have booked a stay (1 night only) for the end of Sept at another Hilton in the Caribbean. I received a "Welcome Back" Coupon Book in the mail to be used at select Hilton's in the Caribbean by the end of Sept.
3 can be used at the Coral Hilton resorts or 3 different one's can be used at any Hilton. For the Hilton's, one is a day pass for two at the Executive Lounge (I'm Diamond so I guess this is useless?), one for a free bottle of wine with dinner at selected hilton restaurants, and the last is for 2 free cocktails at the pool or bar. The catch is "for stays 3 nights or longer". Wonder if they read the fine print or really care about the # of nights? The only one I see using is the 2 free cocktails.
Any one get this or has anyone used these before?

I have only been to the Hilton Barbados location and had a wonderful time, when I was in Nassau Bahamas, I did walk past the Hilton and thought that it was in an "odd" location, in that it is within walking distance of downtown. Having stayed within walking distance of downtown and on both Paradise Island and Cable Beach, in Nassau, staying downtown is my least favorite location.
I think you would love the Hilton Barbados if you go, hope you enjoy your vacation no matter which island you decide to visit.

The inside restaurants are indeed woefully overpriced. Best hotel meal deal is get a cheeseburger and french fries at the pool restaurant to go and eat it at the beach or on your room lanai with that wonderful view with a local Medalla beer or two.

I stayed at the Hilton Barbados last year, and had no problems with the bed. And I have had problems with rock hard beds at all the Hilton's in Thailand, so I know what you're talking about. I was upgraded to a corner suite, so unless they have different beds in those, it was acceptable to me.

As others have mentioned (though it isn't technically the Carribbean), the Hilton Cancun is great, especially if you have status.
If you're stuck on the Carribbean, there's Rose Hall in Jamaica. But again, it is hurricane season, so always risky.

If you are concerned about hurricanes, try Hilton Barbados. Barbados is just outside the circle of islands making up the West Indies, and has the lowest frequency of being hit by hurricanes (no direct hits in over 25 years).
The beach is fantastic, and the property is relatively quiet at this time of year. It does seem to be a cross between a business and a resort hotel, and thus may not have the ambience you are looking for. I was there last year on vacation and loved it!

The Hilton Barbados is a decent hotel although I personally find Barbados the most boring of all the Caribbean islands.
But making predictions and drawing (sometimes quite erroneous) conclusions about hurricane frequencies is risky business even for the experts on Flyertalk.:)
Jamaica which didnt have a hurricane (not even close) hit for 34 years (1952-1986) has had at least four direct hits since then.

I agree that Barbados has the least occurrence of hurricanes than the other HH caribbean properties, but having sat through at least two in Barbados, never say never!!
The reality is that whilst one may not land, you will still get all the miserable weather that comes along with it.
My family have lived in Barbados for over 30 years and in my personal opinion, I would avoid Sept-November unless you really have to. You MAY get decent weather for two weeks (I hope you do), but it is the wet season and the probability drops significantly.
