was on IAD - ICN route. got a free upgrade to J. They called 3 people's name over (including mine) and told us that we were getting that free upgrade.

I just recently lost my morning calm status, so i was surprised to be picked over many others who would have wanted it.

I am just curious is it some random drawing? or do they have a system in place that chooses who gets the upgrade.

I was going to ask the same question about upgrades on Korean Air and it looks like you lucked out.

I have heard they are pretty hard to get unless you have status (which I don't with them). I'm going to Bali through ICN in Sept and really would like to get out of coach. When I call they say I can pay the fare difference which is just nuts compared to what I paid for the tickets. I could literally cancel the tickets and buy two more on United for 4K per ticket and be nearly sure we'd get upgraded and it would still be cheaper than paying the fair difference that KE wanted for an upgrade.

I also doubt KE has a status match program??? Anyone know that?

Well, KE I think is quite hard usually. I seriously doubt about status match with them, but they have life-time statuses available.

This spring however, I was pretty happy to get 3 times upgrade to F (from J) as the 3-class plane was sold as 2-class one (so F seat, but J food). I was happy with the better space and flat sleeping positions :)

But I find KE Y certainly better than UA Y.

PS. Only complaint perhaps is that KE has quite bad headphones, so you should bring yours with you. But that's their only weakest link.

Regards to J food, i was actually disappointed in the quality and quantity of food offered. After 2008 crash, i been flying Y only for KE (since the only time nowadays i get on KE is when i go on vacation to korea on my personal dime), and J back in 2004-6 seemed to offer much more than now.

all well, being able to lie flat for 14 hrs is certainly worth more than FREE :D

Well, I think the food in general, on all airlines has gone worse every year - particularly in intra-European J, but also long-haul.

Worst experience was once on LIS-HEL 5h flight in J when they offered me half an orange and a sausage - luckily I had eaten something beforehand in the lounge, otherwise I would have starved on the flight.

Usually I have got enough on KE and if wanted, also always I managed to get the extra ice-creams. Of course, if to want better food than on KE, one can fly OZ, they have more choice. Once on a Korea-Japan flight I was the only passenger in J and they warmed up all 3 menu choices, all looking excellent and they said I could eat them all, but one was more than sufficient to fill me up :)
