Other European Frequent Flyer Programs - Icelandair flight cancelled less than 12 hours before departure! What am I entitled?

We had flights booked from Paris (CDG) to Boston (BOS) for the morning of June 27. Late the night before (June 26) we received an email saying our flight was cancelled due to union issues. We tried calling several phone numbers posted on icelandair.com but none of their offices are open until after 8am. Since we had to get back to BOS that day we had to scramble to find another flight on our own in the middle of the night (picture us scrambling in the hotel room from 1am-4:30am) and as a result we had to pay 133% of the cost of our Icelandair tickets.

I've contacted their customer service number and the rep said she was sending my request for a refund (for our price paid to Icelandair) to the refund department, and as for my request to be reimbursed the difference we incurred as a result of a last minute cancelled creating the need for a last minute booking they recommended I send an email, which I did 3 days ago. I got the automated response acknowledging receipt of the email, but have not heard a thing from them. I also checked my credit card online and the base refund has not been processed.

A) Will they process the refund for what we paid them initially?
B) Will they reimburse us the difference in cost that was as a result of their last minute cancellation?
C) What recourse are we entitled to?

Thanks!

Not very much I am afraid, although I suspect that Icelandair, unlike many other airlines, will reimburse you for the tickets you had to buy. it will take time - airline payments don't happen quickly.

Icelandair is usually very good about this. They normally book you on to another flight themselves. I know people in Paris who had a similar thing happen and Icelandair booked them on the Air France non-stop flight. They are actually quite pleased ! I would follow-up with a phone call.

Incorrect. OP was starting the trip within EU. OP should consult what they are entitled under the EU. Check euro claim website.

You were incredibly lucky that, with only hours to go before you began travelling, you were able to find new tickets that cost only 33% more than what you had already paid!
