MilesBuzz! - 100 free airmiles is still 100 free airmiles

Grounded! Work and travel has ground to a halt this month. I did have one trip, but that has been it. And I was missing my airmiles.

While shopping in Home Depot (lot of time and chores on my hands) I found out you can purchase gift cards ($10, $25, $50 and $100).

So, I purchased a $100 card on my Advantage Visa (I pay in full each month). Then as another transaction, I made my $5 purchase. And I got $95 in change. Net result, 100 miles and saved a trip to the ATM.

If I don't get back on the road soon, my better half is going to send me to the moon!

Good going Comicwomen. I'm a little surprised they gave you 95% change. Not all merchants will give you less than the face value of the certificate. Many actually reissue one for the lower amount also- taking alot of time and aggravation. Gotta go- need a few things for the house! I'm off to Home Depot where I guess it will work with Amex as well.

I talked to one of the cashiers. Since their gift certificates are plastic cards (like prepaid phone cards) they find it easier to issue cash back.

When I made the purchase the cashier did not have enough cash in the drawer. I offered to pay cash so he did not have to get a cash fill. He said, "No bother, you shouldn't have to do that."

Maybe the airlines can take a lesson from HD.

I am surprised that they don't give you a store credit.

This was the third time I did this in less than a month. Never a problem. My better half here at home frowns on the tactic, so I have only done it when we were shopping there anyway.
