Hi folks, I'm planning to make my annual trip to India at the end of August. I'd like to stop over in London for a few days to visit family and the best fares I found were on Virgin-Atlantic. Now, however, with the threat of a pilots' strike looming, I'd like to look for an alternative airline. Can anyone suggest cheap fares from IAD to DEL with a few days stopover in London that will allow me to maximize the frequent flyer miles I can get?
Many thanks, Vineeta

i used to fly del-iad 2-3 times a year on ba many years ago....they used to have some pretty good fares back then & may be worth checking out....besides that none of the other airlines from india fly iad-lhr-del....ai flies directly from ord & ny to del, kingfisher only goes up to lhr & jet goes from ny to del via bru....

the other alternative is to book iad - anywhere in europe - del, and have a stopover in europe somewhere (paris, frankfurt, munich ..). Then book a roundtrip munich - delhi - munich leaving several hours to spare for your connection. not ideal.
like keyser says either VS or BA is all.

Thanks. BA's tickets are very pricey. But you've given me an idea. I suppose I could fly any domestic airline from IAD to LHR, and then switch to Kingfisher. But does Kingfisher have any US partners so I can get miles?

Thanks, but that doesn't help me since I want to stopover in London en route to DEL.

kingfisher will be part of one world before the year is over....as of now they have delta as one of their partners....

Excellent! I am a member of Delta Skymiles. I'll look for an itinerary with Delta/Kingfisher then.

This idea is not compatible with cheap deals. TATL is in high season.

I'm sorry for not understanding the lingo. What are "heap deals" and what is TATL?

Sorry about the typo. It was supposed to be cheap.
TATL-Trans-Atltantic Travel.
Summer and Christmas times are the most expensive times for travel to Europe.
Summer is high season for travel, especially to Europe. You are not likely to find cheap fares o Europe during the summer.
Breaking up your itinerary into two tickets will cost you more, not less. If you are looking for cheap, try Kuwait, Gulf Air or some such airline that flies to their middle eastern hub via London. Buy a through ticket to DEL. You will probably have to pay for a stop over, but you might get lucky. The cheapest fares either don't allow a stopover, or charge about $100 or so.

Thanks. I ended up booking through Air France IAD to DEL and return. I'm going to skip going through London and probably go in winter when I can get a cheap direct TATL flight.

It's high season around Christmas time too. The high season starts around 10th-15th of Dec and lasts through Christmas-End of the year outbound from the U.S. The first week of January is High season for inbound.

By winter, I meant mid-Feb. I'm thinking of going over the President's Day weekend.
