Hello,
I need a 2 week SUV rental from LA(X), with the possiblity of returning it in San Fran. To be percise actually, we need a rental for 15 days total: Day 1 & 14 will be LA, and so returning here would be an option, and then re-renting a seperate vehicle OW for 36hrs returning this in SF. Or of course we could simply rent a OW for 15 days. colleting in LA & returning in SF... hope that makes sense. Really do not know what would be the best & cheapest option.
From the UK, and a bit of a car rental virgin. Our dates would be the 19th Aug - 4th Sept, and we would be happy to rent 'off airport'. We need 2 drivers, and any SUV or jeep really would do. Looking initially on comparison sites, the cheapest I can see is $1280 for a 15 day rental collecting in LA & returning in SF. This is why i thought renting for 2 weeks in LA, and then getting another rental for a little over a day to get us up to SF(we want to drive PCH, not fly) might be cheaper.
Any ideas, or suggestions? AutoSlash sounds great, although I am still not certain how it exactly it works. Do I book on the AS site at a higher price that available elsewhere, and then AS will bring it down to the lowest possible rate available on via discount codes, price matching etc?
Many thanks

Yes, this is the way AutoSlash works--book at the standard rate, and then we'll being the rate down via discount codes. After that, we'll continue to re-price the rental multiple times a day, and if rates drop, we'll automatically re-book you to lock in the savings.
I also wanted to let you know that in CA, there are never any fees for an additional driver. CA is one of the few states that forbids charging a fee by law, so you won't have to worry about that.
I'll send you a PM on your specific rental needs and see what we can do to help get the price down a bit. Sounds like a great trip!

I was certain in the past there was an adittional, albeit small cost for a second named driver. As I have said we are from the UK, and so will want/need full cover. Car Rental is an area I fall short at, in the past I have rented -25yo in CA, and so used a small UK broker whom did not charge a YDP. This is the first time I have rented over 25yo. Thankyou for getting in touch, I shall read and reply to your PM straight away^

I booked an mid-sized SUV from National for my upcoming trip to LAX for 12 days. The rate I got from National is a bit cheaper then the Autoslash Rate I saw yesterday.
Go Figure...might be because I booked national back in January and the rate yesterday is a last minute rate...just do your research.

Wanted to point out that the rates shown on AutoSlash.com are un-discounted as per our agreement with the rental companies. It's *after* you book that we work to discount the rate. We can typically take at least something off in 90%+ of the reservations we receive. Sometimes the savings can be very significant.
I know it takes a bit of a leap of faith to book at the higher rate with the hope that it comes down, but our track record is quite good. We don't charge to make a reservation, and you can change or cancel at any time, so there's no risk at all to giving us a shot.
Lastly, timing can be everything as you pointed out. I've seen people book at 11AM, and by the time our systems re-price the rental 30 minutes later, the rate has gone up 40%. Obviously the same can also be true in the other direction. We're talking minutes here, so the fact that rates would change over the course of a few monthly is almost guaranteed.

Hmmm okay...
Maybe I'll give it a shot to see if I can get a deal before thursday! (Thats when we fly into LAX and pick up at National)!

...we want to drive PCH...You're going in the wrong direction -- much nicer drive SF to LA as you are on the scenic side of the PCH then. Also in August it can be fogged in ... maybe the worst month of the year from a weather standpoint. Sometimes cars need to be moved between SF/LA which results in very cheap rentals (often pay you a gas allowance rather than charging a fee) but this is more common in September, also no choice in car type when doing this. Good luck, should be a fun trip.

Too late to change now, we have a fixed itinerary, ending in SF where we fly out.
I must say, the AutoSlash route seems flawless. At worst, you can cancel... at best, you can source the best possible rental rate available between time of booking and collection. I am getting a positive response from them so far, v.helpful^
