I'm planning a couple of weeks in Peru and Bolivia at the start of October through to about the 16th or 17th (Macchu Picchu and Salar de Uyuni, yay!), but need to be in Australia (all the way over in Perth) on the 24th for a family occasion.
Since I'll be in the southern hemisphere already, it seems like there should be a sensible way of heading direct to Australia from there, but I can't find a way of doing it that doesn't come out significantly more expensive than just returning to NYC for a day or two inbetween.
I can see LAN have a flight from SCL to AKL which would be perfect (since there's direct *A flights from AKL to PER), but I'm finding it difficult to get onto that for less than a couple of thousand dollars. Depending on the day, the flight seems to vanish, or be cheaper to go via EZE (which would probably also be fine).
It all makes me suspect that kayak isn't the best way to be looking at these flights :P Does anyone have experience wrangling transits through south america? Are there particular sites or airlines that are better than others? RTW tickets still seem eye-poppingly expensive.
