Funny I never remember getting a usd exchange bonus on dining vouchers. Actually I never realized they were issued to us Canadian members in usd currency. Suddenly they are worth $22.75 CAD! Not sure why fairmont needs to annoy their guests which such triviality on a loyalty gift voucher. But so be it. I would say typical Fairmont but I don't want to offend anyone here.

Are your sure the "adjustment" was supposed to reflect the exchange rate between the USD and CAD?

At all Canadian properties Iīve used the dining vouchers the value of the dining cert was discounted to anything between $24.00 and $22.25. Iīve always been told itīs because the dining cert does not include taxes (GST/HST)

Nevertheless I agree with you itīs somewhat petty.

Funny.. the CDN Dollar is around $1.02..

andthe certs should be worth more than $25 without discounting.. now the certs are being discounted more than 10%. So I guess, Fairmont is in the business of currency apparently..:(

Spend them at a Canadian property.@:-)

It would be even worse if you try to redeem them at a non-US, non-Canadian property I suppose. I never noticed it because I never paid attention. These are free to me anyways and I'm happy even if the rates are not that favorable.

You mean spend them at a US property.@:-)

The $25 US dining certs are devalued at Canadian properties..:(

Yes, right, my mistake. That's what I meant: spend them at a US property so there is no exchange rate scam/excuse to rip you off by the hotel.

I had a bit of brain cramp deciphering.. yes, definitely use the dining certs at US Fairmonts if possible to avoice exchange rate scam/excuse.. :)

I mostly avoid Fairmont altogether for their predictably spotty and often odd service and quality.

LOL, I'm with you! But we gotta use up those free night certs they comped us! We only stayed and will only stay 2 nights at Fairmont Shanghai this membership year! I still have a couple of $25 dining certs unused.

This isn't anything new. In my experience the certs have always been converted to USD at the hotel's exchange rate. It works both ways though, I can recall getting over $30 CAD for a cert back in 2009 when the CAD plummeted in value.

I don't recall getting usd credit on exchange. But maybe I am wrong. In that case it's fair... I had a guest today visiting a local museum in Ottawa paying in usd and they accepted it at par!

That said I have another five ovation and one free night cert to use up at fairmont this year. Was going to stay in Kenya but the bush resort can't arrange transfers from Nairobi except to refer me to the local air shuttle which is booked up solid. Amex centurion travel also got nowhere with them. Very very odd way of running a resort.

I've always had it valued as $25, whether the Canadian dollar was above or below the US dollar. Latest experience was at the Fairmont Montreal 2-3 weeks ago for a $25 credit.

That's a fair exchange.. I'm hoping that Fairmont standardizes the Dining/Spa certs exchange rates soon..

Its hard to keep track what each Canadian Hotel uses as its conversion rates..

I had a strange experience at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler this past week/weekend. I used a cert at Lunch, and it was valued at 23.75$, (which is about .95$) okay, fine. Then, at breakfast the next morning (a SUNDAY) I used a cert and it was valued at 24.5$, which is about .98%, then at LUNCH that same day, a non currency trading day and certainly nothing the hotel would have put into practice on a sunday between 11:00-13:30, the rate was back to 23.75$ value, .95%. I don't get that. Consistency is key.

I just wait for opportunity to redeem in the US if I can..

I did redeem all the dining certs at the Mayakoba.. and did the currency calculation and worked out the same as their posted exchange rate.. I think there was a bit of premium on the peso-US dollar exchange rate.. at 12 pesos to $1 US dollars..
