Travel Products - Will this have problems as carry on? 16.54"x13.6"x9.65"

The dimensions for this box (computer) are exactly 16.54"x13.6"x9.65". I had heard in older threads that for some airlines like American the metal sizer is actually 10" wide and not 9" like it's stated on their website. I'm also confused why companies list a max dimension and max individual lengths. If it's the same why wouldn't they just list the individual lengths?

Does anyone forsee this having any problems with major US airlines who have an official 9" max restriction? Are there any sizing boxes that are exactly 9" (making my computer not fit since it's not like I can squish it in). The computer tower isn't that tall so I wonder if it would attract sizing checks from gate attendants.

Thanks in advance!

I have never seen anyone actually size anything on a US airline. I've never seen anyone carry on a box with a computer either.

The issue may be whether it will fit in an overhead compartment. If you're flying on a small plane, it probably will not fit and you'd have to check it (or valet check it).

Another issue may be weight. Can you lift it up into the overhead? Does it look heavy?

Welcome to Flyertalk.

If necessary, and it's in a box, can you take it out of the box? I don't think the size will be an issue, the only thing may be should they ask it be sized (boxes usually give the illusion of looking bigger than they are) you can't mash down that extra half inch or whatever. If however you put it in a carry on bag (removed from the box if necessary) nobody would question it.

Sorry I wasn't more specific. The actual dimensions of the computer itself are 16.54x13.6x9.65. I use a type of velcro harness to carry it around so it doesn't add to the dimensions. I can definitely lift it into the overhead. Would the .65" extra width actually make it not fit into the overhead in some planes?

I may put it in a separate bag too, that seems like a good idea to not attract as much attention.
