Hi, was wondering if HKG regulars would know of any good airport hotels with a good runway view, just to indulge in a bit of plane spotting from the comfortable confines of one's hotel room..

Would be my maiden run to HKG and so some recommendations would be most useful.

You will like Skycity, A marriott hotel @HKG.

There are only 3 hotels in the vicinity of HKG - Regal, SkyCity Marriott and the Novotel. The Regal and Marriott sit at the eastern end of the airport complex "between" the two runways, while the Novotel is about 1.25mi south of the south runway, and 2.25mi south of the north runway. Landing is usually on the north runway 7L/25R, while take off is on the south runway 7R/25L. The Regal is closest to the action, about 500 yards from the piano keys for 25R.

I have not been to any of the rooms at these hotels, but based on my knowledge of HKG and checking Google Earth, if they're using 25R for landing, a north-facing room at the Regal or northwest-facing room at the Marriott should give you a nice view of the final approach, especially the Regal. But if they're using the 7s while you're there, you won't see much except aircraft turning off 7L after they've landed and slowed.

You will see aircraft taking off from 7R from a southeast facing room at the Marriott, but the planes will be quite high already and quite far.

The Novotel is 2.25mi from the north runway; if you're a planespotter taking photos, unless you have a very long lens, you won't get good approach shots for 7L landing. 25R landing is blocked by apartment blocks to the north of the hotel. You do get a good overall view of the whole airport, and take offs from the south runway.

Quarry sorry to intrude on your thread. Wondering a similar thing though for November - looking for a hotel for about 6 nights with a harbour view - either Island or Kowloon.

Looking to spend between AUD $150 - $180 per night for a single.

Took a look at both the Regal & Marriott on Google earth and like you've said The Regal seems to be a stone's throw away from the airport and therefore bound to guarantee a better view. Although as a hotel per say, Marriott seems to a better option (Bigger, newer rooms etc..), but not as near to the action as the Regal.
