Ok, maybe it's just me and this is old, but I've read today on the new issue of Ulisse - the Alitalia mag - that Alitalia runs a shuttle service to the airport, the 'Alitalia Bus'.
Stops: FCO, Roma Ostiense, Roma Termini, Roma San Giovanni in Laterano, Roma San Pietro.
Eligibility: people flying AZ - AZ ticket required.
Tickets: at FCO, or online at alitalia.it, after flight booking.
Fare: € 7 OW

I noticed the same thing, and I think it is new, as well as a good idea.

And it's slightly cheaper that the other bus shuttle services and the train: 7 vs 8.

When codeshares are involved, is there any indication what qualifies as an AZ ticket? Ticket with an AZ flight number, or AZ metal?

Tickets: at FCO, or online at alitalia.it, after flight booking.

It's not active yet, at least for some category of flights.
I've just booked MLA-FCO-MLA, at alitalia.it, and the only options are hotels and cars.

@rove312: Anything booked on the AZ-code of a flight, whoever the operator is, counts as an AZ flight, if we are talking about AZ/MM rules, for AF/FB it is different.
@Alice11: I'd have been surprised if it were online already. If you call they might give you more info, or in any case an online advertising campaign should start soon enough.

I've tried for two days to purchase through the internet site with no luck. Called Alitalia and they don't have a clue. Anybody have any success?

The Alitalia bus is appealing because it stops at Terminal 1 where I'm arriving. The other bus service stops at Terminal 3. Anhyone know the distance between 1 and 3?

After I enter all my personal data, I get the following response:

"With your departure flight code, you can reserve the service just at:
- Leonardo da Vinci Airport meeting point, in front of Terminal 1 arrivals, close to Alitalia Buses;
- Termini Train Station meeting point, Via Marsala close to Bar Trombetta
CHANGE YOUR DATA"

The site will not let me complete my transaction. A poster on another site opined that this site is only for groups that pre-arranged with Alitalia. Seems strange; but mabe true.

How odd... All it says on the website is that, in order to book a seat on the bus, you must have an AZ ticket (I'm not entirely sure if it does work with code-share flights)

I am not on a code share - have an AZ flight number. Just got off the phone with Alitalia and they indicated there is a problem with the web site.

I also tried to book a train trip on the TrenItalia web site from Rome to Citavecchia with no success. Although they don't indicate, I deduced you can only book a week in advance.

A lot of fun dealing with these Italian companies.

It's difficult for Alitalia to run complex operations like bus services AND manage to sell you tickets for it online at the same tiime with Alitalia whatbthey advertise is not what you get, as you are discovering..... give them some time to settle down and used to the idea of a new product....Well maybe ...lots of time

Oh yes  But I can tell you that it's much worse when you actually live there and you have to deal with the local NHS, council, bank, post office etc. (Source: I was based down there for quite a few years).

You cannot book that online at all, AFAIK. It's a regional train, so no online purchases (unless there's something special).

Anyway, just walk to the station and buy it, no need to reserve.

Quite the opposite: you can buy (http://orario.trenitalia.com/b2c/nppTravelChoice.do?morerates=1_1_1_1&ratecode=1_1_1_1&adu=1_1&boy=1_0&disptravfirstname=&travfirstname=1_&disptravlastname=&travlastname=1_&classe=2&iccardcode=&pit=&disp_total=0%2C00&total=0&trenoposti=1+P2&pref=1_4&downonly=1_0&gender=1_X&disp_coach=&disp_compartment=&coach=1_&compartment=1_&nome=&cognome=&request_receipt_pdf=1&ritiro=3&user=&password=&lightfirstname=&lightlastname=&lightemail=&lightemail1=&plus=0&det=3&det_r=&lang=it&stazin=roma+termini&stazout=civitavecchia&datag=20&datam=9&dataa=2011&timsh=14&timsm=00&sort=0&npag=1&solotreno=0&noreservation=0&economy=0&traintype=&stazin_r=Staz_DA&stazout_r=Staz_A&datag_r=&datam_r=&dataa_r=&timsh_r=&timsm_r=00&sort_r=&npag_r=&solotreno_r=0&noreservation_r=0&economy_r=&provenienzaWeb=3&request_receipt_pdf=&car=0&dc=0) regional tickets, unless it's something special.

In the Rome's area 'special' means FCO: in this case, you have to buy the 'special' ticket and then add a regular ticket.
Eg, FCO-Ostiense, flat fare € 8, then Ostiense - X. No FCO-X ticketing available. Actually you can see the routing & schedule but you cannot complete the booking.
It's Trenitalia, you know, by the time their IT will deliver this sort of service, I'll have got a nephew who will be able to go on holiday in the outer space.

It's not that bad ;) Their website has much improved in the last couple of years and, apart from having issues with buying tickets with Amex cards issued abroad, I've always found it quite user-friendly and never had any major problems.

True and positive for all the travellers to Italy, but unfortunately almost everything else is a kind of middle ages.
The level of technology is really abismal, and for millions of commuters there's nothing, not even the ticket machines and the fare gates in the stations!

The most annoying thing is the lack of validating machines (mostly because they get vandalised at all times) at minor stations. I remember once travelling from a town in Abruzzo to Rome Tiburtina (what a nightmare of trip, by the way - if it wasn't for the astonishing sceneries I would have been dead by now) with a blank ticket i.e. without any date or time as I could not print it on the relevant machine. The train officer came at some point and wanted to fine me! After quite a long discussion in my broken Italian, he then walked off saying "Same old excuse" or something like that - how rude!

Just to give an example that can be useful to travellers: most of the FR1 - the line from FCO - stations have no ticket machines, no fare gates, no kiosks, no staff, no connection to some Trenitalia office for special assistance requests and emergency, no CCTV and other security measures, no real time information screen, no wifi. Just 4 walls and a roof and the platforms - unless it's a 'fermata' and in that case you don't have even the roof. From time to time a train showing up.
Validating machines? It's 2011, come on, still paper tickets and validating machines stamping paper tickets?

How long dose this bus take from FCE to, say, Termini? The train seems to be 30-35 minutes, but this is much cheaper. But my stopover isn't that long - would hate to get stuck on a bus for 60+ minutes!

it depends on traffic and, on rush hours, 1 hour is reasonable time to budget

Hi guys,

during the Christmas holidays I am planning a VCE-IST trip, connecting in Rome. I am flying AZ1466 and then AZ702 on Jan 1.

Since this gives me a lot of time in FCO (from 11.30 to 21.35), I was thinking of checking in my luggage in VCE and going for a stroll in Rome. What do you think would be the bes option to reach the city?

Normally the Leonardo express train would seem more appealing, as it should be the fastest option. However, I am wondering whether maybe the train does not travel as frequently on an holiday (Jan 1st is usually one of few "special holidays", with more limited service than sundays). The bus furthermore is cheaper, and perhaps the traffic is not bad on such a holiday. Also the level of comfort plays a role, since I am traveling with my mother.

If anyone has some first-hand experience, I would appreciate their insight.

Also, no discount for SkyTeam E+ for the bus I suppose, right?

What are the hours of operation of the bus service?

I've an upcoming arrival at FCO at 22:45, and after filling out the 2 screens to book a ticket, it gives me a message along the lines of "We cannot sell you a ticket".

EDIT: I've just seen on the az website: "Il servizio, offerto ai passeggeri Alitalia in collaborazione con la società Alitransport, è disponibile dalle ore 05.20 alle ore 22.45."
