Sixt - Anyone used SIXT car rental at MIA?

Their rates are very low compared to others, are they for real renting reliable cars, or it's a joke? I've been able to reserve an economy for about $15/day all tax and LDW included. Anyone who had any good/bad experinces with SIXT/Miami at MIA please share.
Thanks!

Sixt is a pretty well known company. It is mainly a European agency. And no problems there. The reason why Sixt prices are less is b'cos it is an off airport location and has a shuttle.
And as I always suggest - always buy the rental car insurance and Sixt's rental insurance is a pretty good price. Safe than sorry. Hope this helps.

Sixt is in the Rental Car Centre with all the other major car rental companies so is off site but so are all the others.

The RCC is brilliant, helpful signage, information desks and useful people are banned by state law in FL so you sort of just have to wander around until you see a funny shaped shuttle bus. The pavements (they call them sidewalks) are specially designed at MIA so no matter where you leave your trolley, it will roll into the road and hit a car.

$15 sounds like the going rate. I got a whole Dodge Charger for $30 per day from Thrifty. I just booked a compact for $12 next week through Alamo.

Be careful when they try to sell you extras at these places, the Thrifty guy told me that I would need to buy a SunPass too, I told him I was going up the I-95 and didn't need one, he said oh you sure do, there is a toll gate and they no longer accept cash. I didn't believe him and was right not to, they do accept cash on the I-95 and it is about $1.75 which turned out to be exactly the amount of money I had in my sock

I see RCC shuttle seams to be not a great connecting tool. Is it psssible to walk on foot from the terminal to the Rental Car Centre? Are there sidewalks, walkways, etc???

Just spoke to Sixt about my upcoming 9-day rental at MIA. Well, they are asking for my 9-day car rental period either 7$/day for a SunPass (i.e. 63 extra dollars) or 10$/day extra for each day (i.e. 90 extra dollars) if I don't opt for the Sun Pass but I end up using non-cash toll roads (i.e. unserviced by attendants) at least once.
As I drive towards and from the Florida Keys, what would be the best recommendation for how to drive my rental from/to MIA and what to buy/not to buy from Sixt?
Using SR 836, SR 826, and US 1 would be a big headache or would work just fine and won't make me also pay highway tolls of anykind? Locals or frequent Keys travellers, please advice.
Thanks!

The Monorail will eventually connect to the terminal. It's not a safe or convenient walk. Minimum service standard is a shuttle bus every 6 minutes iirc. How is that not convenient? Many airports have delays 2-3x that long.

There is a forum on FT Dedicated to Florida travel. Have a look/post there and you will probably find your answer.

No need to get the Sunpass ahead of time. You can pay cash everywhere, and you would be hard pressed to rack up $6/day on toll charges in Florida, unless you're planning on just cursing up and down the turnpike all day, and that doesn't sound like a lot of fun :)

Last week I just rented at last minute from SIXT as my 5 day cost with Avis was going to be $260 and with SIXT even at the last minute I got $134 a/i for same period.

They also told me there rates are the same all year, no black out periods. Previously I have rented at Xmas with Alamo and Avis at exorbinant rates.

I love SIXT, and they have a location at FLL in the car rental centre as well.

Their desk is small at MIA (only 2 or 3 checkin desks available) and I suspect at FLL too, but I did not have a long wait. They were very accomodating and very nice to me. In comparison the line up at Alamo was huge.

Bye Bye Avis!

I rented a car from them last week. I booked a compact but they upgraded me to a brand new Ford Taurus with all the bells and whistles. That part was good. The cost was not so good as a 2 day rental was about $100 a/i. I didn't use the car much. No tolls at all. I noticed that after the first day the fuel still showed full. I knew it wasn't full but from a rough calculation I decided to put a couple of gallons in the tank to be sure I can get to the airport the next day and wouldn't need to worry. I didn't do much driving the second day either, maybe another 20 miles in all. The fuel guage still showed full. I returned the car and gave the guy the key. It was very awkward to not have him go to the car with me to inspect it and get the mileage and the gas level. I was a bit worried so I went to the office myself and asked the clerk if I needed to do anything more. She said not to worry and that I will get a credit on my credit card within a few days. They take double the rental amount on the credit card and refund the difference when the car is returned. I checked today and they still have a charge of about 42 dollars more than the original rental charge on my card. I am thinking that they are trying to charge me for the gas, eventhough the needle was right up to the full point. Now I have nothing to show that it was full when I brought it in and it's my word against theirs. I should have insisted I get something in writing. If they said it was not full when I brought it back I could have gone around the corner to fill it and pay about 5 bucks instead of 42.

I had the same experience with Sixt at MIA. Great base price but had to pay $7 per day for tolls as many tolls are no cash (many other car rental companies also charge this). I returned the car with the fuel showing full. The attendant did not give me a receipt. I was charged for fueling. Customer service quickly sent me a copy of the invoice but ignored me when I asked for a refund for the fuel charge.

I had a great experience at half the Avis cost out of MIA. I highly recommend Sixt.

My only criticism is I was told I would be sent a Sixt membership card and so far (now 2 months) nothing has arrived in my mail. I wish they would send it to me as I will now use them whenever I can but the locations in N.A. are limited but will grow.

I'm glad to hear so many positive replies to Sixt in MIA. I booked with them last night for a week in April . They were way cheaper than Alamo, who I normally use. Alamo wanted $105!! a day for an Chevy Aveo or similar!!!!!! Sixt was only $36 a day for the same class of car!! I travel alone and have nothing to prove ,so I always get the smallest car-they're best on gas, too.
I filled out my drivers license info ahead of time,so things should go quick there.

I have not seen a car as small as a Chevy Aveo in the parking lot of Sixt at MIA, it is entirely possible that they don't actually have any.

I had two rentals for a Chevy Aveo or similar in October and both times they gave me a much larger Ford, I forget what it was called but I posted it in the Sixt upgrades thread.

Hi everybody,

Last time I booked Sixt in MIA I get a Ford Flex instead of an Intermediate, for free. it was a pleasure. Very nice staff and very good prices. Sixt is my favorite car rental company.

Anyway, I'm going to rent a car in MIA in February and I wonder if someone know the difference between class Ford Mustang GT, Convertibles (FTAR) and class Ford Mustang, Convertibles (STAR) ? The second one is more expensive, but I don't know why.

I know it is not always the model you ask that you get, but I really want either a Mustang, either a Dodge Charger. How to be sure of that ?

Thanks

i would think the star is the standard 6 cyclinder model and the gt has the v-8, seems like this one should be higher and is on the qoutes i have. they state you options are mustang convertible , camaro convertible or chrysler 200 convertible

I like Sixt.
Since I posted initialy this thread I've rented twice with them from MIA.
No problems so far. Just try to avoid using toll highways when you leave MIA and buy a Sunpass mini for tolls for next day, activate it and stick it on the windshield. Otherwise, their toll policy is not very "accomodating", especially if you don't expect to be a frequent turnpike user.
Also make sure when you return the car to ask the attendant to show you that the car has been entered back in their system, otherwise if they do it later, you might find yourself charged with an extra day. It happened to me last summer but they fixed the payment after I explained them that the time they mentioned for me returning the car was actually after my flight had landed me to Canada where I live.
Also, at least for now their cars are brand new, so you won't get a wreck.
Just keep an eye on their rates, if you can afford the time, as they fluctuate dramatically from one week to another until you find the price that you like and book it. Of course this works only if you know about one or two months in advance when you will be renting.

I had the same issue as some of the previous posters.

I returned the car in Miami with a full tank after topping off the fuel tank at a gas station just blocks from the airport, yet I'm showing $80 in fuel charges. Where are they getting their information from? I might have to go with another provider next time, one that actually checks the car and hands you a receipt at the airport (like Hertz) because these mistakes happen WAY too often and it's a huge pain to deal with.

Hello...

I was going to rent with SIXT for my upcoming 14-day trip to Florida - Then I read the rental conditions and nearly fel of my chair, when I read they charge upto 3 x the rental price as a deposit - What the f**k. The weirdest part, you have zero excess on the LDW.

I was going to use the 25% off at Florida locations - The deal on the Mercedes-Benz E350 Convertible is GOOD, only $1662 for two weeks. At Hertz you end up paying $2400 for the same car and Hertz only charge $200 extra.

BUT charging 3 x $1662 is STEEP.

Anyone have ANY experience with SIXT and their deposit policies at MIA?

They will not charge your credit card until you return the car and settle the cost, but thei MIGHT put a hold on your funds, so your available credit on your credit card will diminish with that ammount. Say you have a 10k credit limit and your rental estimate cost is 1000 they might put a 3000 hold on your acount and you will only have available 7k in credit that you can use on your card. Then, at the end they charge you the cost and whatever else expenses you incur (gas, tolls, etc) and they will release the hold from your card and you will see the charge on your account.

The "0 excess" on LDW means you have "0" deductible and you will pay for it a premium. If you want 300 dollars deductible it will cost you a little less. Keep in mind this is a German company and they don't translate in English the terms all the time the way we know them. I other words it means if you damage or total the car you pay nothing if you are on "0" and you pay 300 if you are on 300. At least this is my understanding, you can call and ask directly the MIA office.

In December I rented a car from SIXT in MIA and returned it in FLL.
I booked a 3 series and got a VOLVO convertible, which was not bad.
The Car rental terminal in MIA is a nice experience, much better than shuttle busses IMO.
I assumed at FLL it would be at the airport as well, or that there would be signs. I followed the car rental return signage but Sixt was not there, so I called them and they guided me to their lot a short drive away. From there they have a shuttle to the airport.

I asked about Sun Pass, they told me to just drive through the Sun Pass lanes and they will work it out.

Generally I welcome Sixts' move into the US, as I like their lineup of cars more than what I experienced with others in the US, but I might be biased being German.

My primary wish is an BMW X5 or an Mercedes M. I can see that these cars are in the XFAR class on Sixt's webpage.

where do you take your information from, satish_ny?

Its been the policy at all the US rental companies I have ever done business with: Avis, Hertz, Budget, National, Alamo. There is never an additional driver fee for spouses or co-workers. I have rented cars from all of these for more than 40 years. I was assuming that this is the norm for car rental in the US. I would be very surprised if Sixt wants to nickle and dime unsuspecting customers with an Additional Driver Fee for spouses.

I just wanted to know, if this is written somewhere.

the Sixt system does not allow to enter a second driver without charge.
therefore I would be very interested how this should work in US not to charge for the spouse

so, if you give this kind of information you should not draw on experience of other rental companies regardless of how much experience you may have.

obviously the information given to mtbmt01 is correct

How did you make that determination? Spouses do not need to be listed as additional drivers. You seem to be very opinionated about what I should say or not say, but have no qualms about making illogical deductions?

Spouses do not need to be listed as additional drivers.

satish_ny: Thanks for this info. We do a lot of FLL renting for business. We will be omitting co-workers and spouses from records based on your assurance they will be covered as additional insureds in the case of accidents.

As you know this is a valuable and very important point (if a spouse was not covered the liability can be large) and you will be saving us lots of money. I will refer other people to your post as well. We historically have used National (emerald card program) for this benefit, but this makes it even easier.

Just because thats how other companies do it, does not mean thats how Sixt does it. In fact Sixt is different. With coworkers, unless its a corporate reservation, the coworkers need to be added. And not including corporate reservations, all additional drivers need to be named on the rental. This is straight from Sixt's terms and conditions of rental.

So again, experience from another company does not qualify one to make determinations about the policies of a different company.

I will refer other people to your post as well. We historically have used National (emerald card program) for this benefit, but this makes it even easier.

Dont make decisions based on inaccurate information from somebody that has already stated their statment is from experience at other companies not Sixt.

I was told during a January rental that there would be an additional
charge by Sixt for a 2nd driver (spouse). The rate was still lower
than Hertz.

Do they really hold $2500 for a PCAR at Sixt? The reservation is only $300.

I'm going to hire a car in Miami for about 10 days i july - august this year.

My primary wish is an BMW X5 or an Mercedes M. I can see that these cars are in the XFAR class on Sixt's webpage.

My question is: What are my chances in ending up with one of those cars, and not an Cadillac Escalade, that is also in the XFAR class?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had the same concern and asked my agent to check the position. Their reply is as follows:

"If we can guarantee a car type it will show only that car in the category if it shows the car plus as below a mention the vehicle may be similar then the supplier doesn't guarantee the make and model in the in the picture. We can of course always make a request for the customer but this is not always guaranteed. I hope this helps."

I'm hearing lots of examples of renters NOT getting the car they want and, for me at least, the whole purpose of using SIXT is to get something not available elsewhere. That and this deposit policy has very much put me off using them.

Hello all,

are there any experiences with Sixt Diamond Card recognition? Do they give upgrades in MIA?

Hi!

Yes they give upgrades. I booked a 3 series last year and received an XC90. Had the option to choose a Jaguar F Type instead. The Volvo was listed in the same categorie as a BMW X5.

I also was charged for fuel on a vehicle I returned full. Otherwise I was very happy with my rental and the costs. I called their customer service and emailed a copy of my gas charge on my cc statement and they removed the charge. For my return in Sept, I will ask the agent to note the full tank on my paperwork and monitor my cc charge to avoid a repeat, as this seems to be more than just a one time "oops" on their part. Can't argue with the costs, and the rental process is very easy.

yes they do, at least for Platinum. If I remember correctly, I waived their offer, as I wanted a particular car. I was very pleased with their service and prices for the rental were highly competitive.

Does anyone know what the MIA PCAR fleet is these days? Planning to rent in late May...
