Hong Kong and Macau - Hong Kong, Grand Hyatt vs Mandarin Oriental

Hi FT!
My wife and I are going to Hong Kong and Shangahi (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marriott-rewards/1217082-rc-shanghai-pudong-rc-shangahi-portman.html) for the first time. It will probably be a very long time before we go again.
In Hong Kong currently I'm booked at the Grand Hyatt and have used a guaranteed suite upgrade.
Several of my friends have told me that I really should stay at the Mandarin Oriental, especially as my trip is not only business, but also tourism with my wife.
So I've seen both have pretty good reviews. I'd be very happy to get your advice. If you had a one time trip to Hong Kong, would you trade earning points and suite at the Grand Hyatt for the Mandarin?
Thanks!
Bege

The GH is one of the best Hyatts in the world, but it does not make the "10 best hotels in Hong Kong" list, while both MO and LMO do. Better still are the Peninsula, IC (ex-Regent), FS and W, while the "great value" option is the Langham in Mong Kok (edgier location but more luxurious hotel). All of these have far nicer suites that the GH, fwiw. Like three times as nice. All depends if you are looking for luxury or just floor space.

Hi number_6,
I have the choice of a regular room in MO or suite in GH. The rest of them are not in my corp rate. (I'm working, then taking extra days with my wife). Between the two where would you recommend?

The Grand Hyatt is not as good as it seems. It is very British and "Old Style" but the Club is great. Also, the location is pretty good.
I once had the experience of a "laid through" matress which I think it not acceptable at all in such a place and that was at the "Executive Floor"

A regular room certainly does not come close to a suite, regardless of the [small] quality differences between the two hotels. Plus, you'll be a nobody (i.e. no status) with the Mandarin Oriental vs. a VIP (i.e. Diamond) with Hyatt.

As much as I am a Hyatt loyalist, the GH in HK has really tired rooms, by HK luxury standards. Even the suites are tired looking. I usually prefer suites and would trade down a slight bit to have a suite, but in this case the MO rooms are to be preferred.
