Meet me in the lounge
Dec 2, 03, 6:30 pm
Blueprint magazine (Architecture, Design & Cuture magazine available in WH Smiths uk or Borders US)
Cover story is called "Come fly away" - why aeroplanes are the hotels of the future.
Page 46 - 49 is a general article on what we can expect to see on board in the coming years, the whole bums on seats / luxury interiors argument.
All the artwork is sketches of the new Virgin Upper Class cabin! Great news for VS!
Then page 50 - 51 is a two page spread all about the design, planning and installation of the new suites.
Great designer's sketches, layout drawings etc. Vs comes off great in the article.
Interesting to read...and I quote
"Where other seats recline at bedtime, however, VAA's innovation is to flip the seat over - whereupon it becomes a bed, with a matress. With the touch of a button, the back of the seat folds forwards and smoothly half somersaults until it is as close to horizontal with the floor as aeronautical physics currently allows.
Though it means getting up, the ritual is worth it, says Tom Lloyd. 'The prinicple of the mechanism is that on an airline seat, you really shouldn't sleep on the same surface that you sit on. People sweat continuously and when you're sweating on to the same surface for eight hours or more, this results in the breakdown of the upholstery. Virgin knew it wanted a solution to this problem, so decided on turning the chair over'"
Rest of article mentions on pitching the project to the design and manufacture agency's etc.
No mention of the problem of loud mouth t****r's who insist on shouting across the cabin to each other, keeping everyone awake.
As an aside:
Have now switched all my outbound legs to VS45, give me J2000 anyday! At leats I can sleep in peace!
