Choice usually gives only 500 points for new referrals. Through August 11, 2011, the referral bonus is 1,000 points. Referrals require submitting a friend's first name and email address. Choice then sends an email to the friend with some details of the offer and a registration link. Details below:

Earn double points for referring your friends now through August 11, 2011.

That's right! You already know the many rewards of Choice Privileges membership, so why not tell your friends and family and let them enjoy Choice Privileges membership as well?

Here's how it works:

Enter the first name and e-mail address of anyone you'd like to refer and click the submit button.
An e-mail will be automatically sent to your friend(s) on your behalf telling them about the benefits of Choice Privileges and how to join the program.
Each time one of your referred friends joins and completes their first point-eligible stay, 1,000 bonus points will be added to your account.*
Your friend will receive 1,000 bonus points upon completion of their first eligible stay.
To participate, you must be a Choice Privileges member. Additional terms and conditions apply.

* Bonus points will post within 72 hours of the referred friend completing their first eligible stay. Allow 20 days after check-out for hotels in Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, Central America, Australasia and the Caribbean for points to post to your account.

I give referrals when requested by PM. Just send me a PM with your first name and email address. I also have a referral link (http://ecrmctom.choicehotels.com/emessageRMSOnly/servlet/RMS?v=2&i=26724&t=000015415&ep=hv&c=h%3e7Bh%3bwGzHyO4I) that is supposed to get the referral credit, though I don't know for certain whether it will get the double referral credit. (I think that it would. YMMV.)

Believe it or not, some people actually pay money to stay overnight in a hotel and earn points valued less than their total stay cost.

Nevertheless, Choice points simply aren't worth very much. To me, 1k Choice points are only worth probably around $7.

Does anyone know....

"Each time one of your referred friends joins and completes their first point-eligible stay, 1,000 bonus points will be added to your account.*
Your friend will receive 1,000 bonus points upon completion of their first eligible stay. "

Does that mean the bonus points are only awarded if you choose points rather than miles?

4.The referring Choice Privileges member's account must be in an Active status at the time the friend's stay is completed.
5.500 bonus points wil post into your account and 500 bonus points will post to your referred friend's account within 72 hours of the referred friend completing their first eligible stay. Allow 20 days after check-out for hotels in Europe, the Middle East, Mexico, Central America, Australasia and the Caribbean for points to post to your account."

All reference is only to an "eligible stay" so seems to be OK to earn miles rather than points. Anyone else have any experience or think differently?

Hm, it all depends on whether it's a separate posting or not.

The "within 72 hours" sounds suspiciously like it might post at the same time as the stay, and if it's set up to post on the same line as the points in the stay, that could mean you get nothing if you earn miles (since Choice isn't able to earn both miles and points on the same earning "line"), analogous to how you don't earn a elite status bonus (of either points or miles) on a stay on which you earn miles.

So my best guess is that it's much more than 50% chance that the person doing the stay will earn no bonus if they earn miles on the qualifying stay. The referrer is more likely to earn the bonus, because it won't be associated with a stay at their end.

Having said that: 500 bonus points is so little, I'm not sure whether it's worth worrying about! It's the very fact that 500 normal points (the normal earning for someone without status on a $50 stay) is so little that is likely why someone would choose to earn miles instead of points on a cheap one-night stay. So if they're willing to give up 500ish points for 250 miles (or 600 RR 2.0 points), they should be willing to give up another 500 points.
