The U S Military and affiliated organizations (e.g. Marines Memorial Association) operate resorts, hotels, base-affiliated family holiday areas and have arrangements with other organizations to extend lodging (e.g. MMA members have reciprocal arrangements with similar organizations throughout the world).
I wanted to start a list here that might be useful to military, which often include retired or disability-retired members, and sometimes even those who did not retire but served honorably.
The Armed Forces Recreation Center Resorts, operate several resorts in the US as well as Germany and Korea; you can read more about them (including Shades of Green at Orlando) here (http://old.armymwr.com/portal/travel/recreationcenters/).
One of these you have probably seen if you have been in Honolulu - Hale Koa (http://www.halekoa.com) (House of the Warriors) military resort at Fort DeRussy in Honolulu, close to some very nice beaches and cetrally located for anyone who can hoof it, or use closeby public transport - their rates (http://www.halekoa.com/rooms_reservations/rates.cfm)will vary on room category and rank.
There is also the Armed Forces Vacation Club (http://www.afvclub.com/) and their deals... for $369 a week, they offer some very nice deals in a number of locations in and out of the ConUS - basically condos owners have not taken up for the period requested (and all inclusives cost more, of course).
There are other military-affiliated lodging possibilities as well, such as the US Marines Memorial Association operated Marines' Memorial Club & Hotel (http://www.marineclub.com/) in downtown San Francisco (with reciprocal lodging benefits in about 180 locations for members, US and abroad). MMCH has a brilliant location on Sutter Street, nice views and is often quite reasonable compared to area hotels.
Feel free to add more for military (or eligible ex-military) members. (For example, Travis AFB used to - have not checked in years - operate a rustic lodge in the Sierra Nevada, not far from Norden, iirc.)
