Suggestions - Should we stop using the quote button?

I know that I will end up getting a lot of abuse for suggesting this but should we all stop using the quote button as we are continuing to move into a multi platform world that doesn’t have very big screens.
I regularly use the mobile site (rather than the app) on my iPhone and find that I can’t follow threads that have very long OPs as I have to click through too many pages to get to the reply.
Can an alternative be used to quoting the previous response such as using the @ symbol as in @Genius1 for example?
I know that I like using quote on forums but I personally think that it is over used.:D

Agreed. Use it selectively to quote just the passage you specifically want to refer to or do as suggested by hingeless.
Nothing wrong with using the quote button as long as it's used properly. Why should I have to change my ways just to suit the boys with their toys. :p

just to add to this thread, i can kind of see where hingeless is coming from here, the mobile app isnt the easiest thing in the world to use as far as quotes go, perhaps its something that can be worked on for any future update

@xyz will be very inconvenient for me as a computer user because I'd have to scroll up the page, or go back a page or two, to find the poster referenced.
I too am bothered when some people quote the whole response instead of just the relevant couple of sentences, but I think that's a fairly rare occurrence.

Because you also post over-sized pictures. :)
I agree with the overall precept ... far too much complete quoting, instead of a bit of selectivity.

Well, I had to quote, didn't I? ;)
And after a brief stop in Community, it's now off to a more appropriate home in Suggestions.

Quoting is absolutely imperative when some threads are hundreds of responses long, however agree quotes should be used appropriately and not indiscriminately.
You can quote me on that...

Why not just have the mobile version format the quote so it looks like a quote?

... mobile quote ... quote?
Beyond my understanding, Sir :D

iPhone app does a nice job of distinguishing a quote. There are some offenders that I'd like to report that quotes the entire post. Is that allowed?
Also if we highlight a passage and press quote would that selectively quote?
I'm also annoyed I can't quote a quote inside another response

Indeed we should, but here's the catch: where is the

button in this screen capture:

It is a serious deficiency of the board software that there is no basic Post Reply button at the bottom of each post, and that the Quote button is so dominant. I would shrink the quote button to the size of the multi-quote button and add a Post Reply button the size of the current Quote button.
I would also disallow quoting entire posts, and I would disallow quoting images. I would modify the quote button behaviour such that when you select some text before clicking it, only the selected text would be quoted.
Another issue is the Quick Reply feature. There is a checkbox to quote the post, but unless the member switches to advanced mode, there is no way to change how much of the post is quoted. So I would remove that checkbox.
Finally, I would prohibit quoting any part of the last post when there are no intervening posts. Overtyping makes this a technical challenge, but not an insurmountable one, IMO.
Many posters don't understand the implications of over-quoting; some understand but can't be bothered to reform because the software doesn't make it easy. Assuming IB doesn't get a kickback from mobile data plan vendors, it is in everyone's best interest (save the ISPs and similar that charge by volume) to evolve the software in this fashion, so I don't understand why it hasn't been done.
