I am a bit confused with Finnair and Oneworld awards.
I am planning an award trip to Hong Kong. Points needed for direct Finnair flight can easily be found from Finnar.com. If I want to use Cathay Pacific instead for Helsinki-Hong Kong trip, how many points are then required for a business class ticket? Would it then be a Cathay award ticket combined with Finnair flight to some european city where Cathay flight departs or would it be a oneworld award ticket where required points are calculated according to the distance travelled. If it is oneworld award ticket the calculated distance would then be the real distance travelled and not the distance between Helsinki and Hong Kong, right?
I tried to search info from Flyertalk. I also called to Finnair Plus, but even for them the rules were some what unclear. THanks for your help.

For OW award it's the total distance travelled, including connections.

With AY points to/from HKG you can use either:
1. CX award (with AY connection to somewhere in Europe where CX is present) with fixed points or
2. you can use the OWA / oneworld award which requires AY + min. two other OW airlines.
example for HEL-HKG rtn with plenty of CX: HEL-LHR(BA)-LHR-HKG(CX)-FRA(CX)-HEL(AY). Again, like I wrote above it's the total great circle distance used for OW awards with AY Points.

Thank you for your quick answer. Just one more question to make sure I have understood correctly. If I use CX award, point requirement for Europe-Asia flight 240000 Finnair Plus points. How is the connecting Finnair flight combined to that CX award ticket. Will it be another deduction of points according to the Finnair award table or is it possible to buy a normal ticket for example HEL-LHR-HEL which would then be combined with CX award ticket under the same PNR number?

Yeah, tell me about it! Well, it's for a return flight, but anyway.
OT continues, but have to say I got sick when I noticed the offer from Vepsäläinen furniture store earlier this year where you could earn 250000 Finnair Plus points by bying a 5k euro bed. My 250000 points earned mostly from flying surely have cost me much more than that... (it takes roughly 8 to 9 return trips to Far East to get that amount of points by flying). That tells something about Finnair attitude to its loyal customers. But that's another issue, which has been discussed to death in other threads in this forum...

It will not be another deduction if you fly (w/o stopovers) HEL-Asia rtn by using CX award with AY Plus.

I'd assume you can take CX codeshare for example on AY/BA to/from HEL to a CX station in Europe..I have not taken plain CX awards to/from Europe so I cannot comment with 100% certainty but I'm sure AY Plus can confirm this after a quick phone call.

This is something I haven't quite got yet. For example HEL-DXB-HEL on BA in F = a modest cost of 280 000 AY points. Using oneworld award (6000-12000 km) in F = 200 000 AY points.

Is this correct? And if so, what's the point of partner specific redemption tables...?

Or where's the catch here...?

While on the subject; Does anyone know what booking class a First and Business class ticket respectively books into on AA for Finnair award bookings? I.e using Finnair points to redeem an AA Partner Award or OW Award with AA.

Using Expertflyer seem to be are a number of Award options (classes) available for Business, for instance (J/U/R/C).

Thanks,
Andy

HEL-LHR-DXB-LHR-HEL is 14715 km and therefore 240 000 points.

Plus in order to get the OW award you need two OW carriers + AY, so you can't fly HEL-LHR-DXB-LHR-HEL direct both ways, but instead HEL-BUD-LHR-DXB-LHR-HEL or something, which is a worse routing.

Of course in other routes the partner table can be cheaper too (e.g. all partner awards below 60 000 for economy) plus getting the AY+2 can be quite impossible on some routes (you probably don't want to connect through Helsinki flying US domestic...)

Thanks! I guess it was a challenging concept only for me... One final question on this matter, if I may? Can I use oneworld award if I fly HEL-LHR-JFK-ORD-JFK-LHR-HEL. Combination being AY/BA/AA. And how many points would I need?

Thanks again...

Yes. 150 000 / 220 000 / 300 000 AY points for Y / J / F.
