Looking for an itinerary suggestion for the Romantic Road, departing from Fussen and ending in Rothenburg ob der Taber? We have 1 to 2 days for this itinerary.

What roads would you take?

What towns would you stop in, and what would you see/do in those towns?

We do plan to spend the night in Rothenburg ob der Taber. Between Fussen and Rothenburg ob der Taber, would you spend the night in any of these cities on the way to Rothenburg ob der Taber, if so, which town?

To add, we will be traveling by car.

Thank you

You might try looking through this site (http://www.romantischestrasse.de/) as they have much of the information you are looking for.

I would recommend using one of the bus tours since that will give you the opportunity to look out the window and enjoy the beautiful scenery without worrying about driving off the cliffs.

By the way, the town you referred to is actually spelled with Tauber, not Taber.

Good luck and hope you enjoy your trip.

Actually, I have to disagree with JoostvD: I would go ahead and rent a car. There are so many charming small towns on the Romantic Road, and if you're on the bus, you really can't stop off. Even some of the small towns have baroque churches which are unbelievably ornate. If you take the Romantic Road "East" route (it has a "west" and "east" route south of Augsburg, do be sure to see the Wieskirche. Also, if you want to take a detour right at the beginning, you might drive from Füssen to Schloß Linderhof, which is a very nice castle to visit.

It is difficult to suggest which towns to visit! I like Landsberg am Lech, Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl. These are all famous, and you won't be the only tourist there! Also, Augsburg is very nice, although it is a city, not a town.

I have stayed over in Dinkeslbühl, but that is too close to Rothenburg for you. Why not just plan 2 days, then see how far you get? If you see where you are at 3:00 in the afternoon, you can then estimate how much further you want to go and call ahead if necessary. You didn't say how large your party is, but if you are a couple, it shouldn't be hard to find a room.

Hi - I just got back (last night) from a 2 day trip down the road with my wife. It was my second trip down the road, the first being by bus over 15 years ago. We stopped in a number of the towns listed as being on the path and my recommendation would mostly follow David's. If I had to plan it again, I'd do this:

Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Dinkeslbühl
Nordlingen
Landsburg
Fussen
--> Don't miss Munich!

A couple other thoughts:
Consider staying at Burg Colmberg (http://www.burg-colmberg.de) rather than staying in Rothenburg. You would not soon forget the experience and the food is amazing. Rothenburg seems to turn into a ghost town at night anyway.

If you plan to pick up German goodies, Rothenburg seems to be the place to do it and a couple of the places where we purchased also shipped our stuff home for us.

By the time you get to Fussen, you may be a bit tired of churches and half-timbered buildings, but don't miss the St. Mang church. It's stunning. There is little else going on in Fussen - I would not plan to spend much time looking around the town center. The path along the river is nice.

Spend the extra dough and get a sporty German car for your drive.

On our way from Fussen to Munich, we took the smallest roads we could find that went in the right general direction and were rewarded with our own little "Romantische Straße" that passed through the most charming little towns and drop-dead gorgeous pastures.

Have fun.
