I'm trying to go LAX-SCL with my almost 3yo daughter for 10-14 days, between 7/26 and 8/17 using miles. I have 120K on AA, and about 60K on UA, and I'm having lots of trouble finding award seats without horrible, horrible connections. Can anyone help me? I'd be willing to do a "standard" eceonomy award or business class award in one direction, but I don't think I have enough miles for both ways. The worst case scenario, I'd get an award ticket for myself and buy a child fare for my daughter, but I'm having enough trouble finding 1 award seat, let alone two.

Thanks in advance.

I assume there's no space on LA 601/600 (LAX/SCL - 1 stop LIM) via your AA miles. That is the easiest way there, and the only way (absent flying AA) that you have enough miles for 2 tix. Have you tried to route LAX (AA) SFO (LA 2609) LIM (LA 601) SCL? The LIM connection is easy. Although it is low season, the tough flight may actually be the SCL/LIM segment as it is fed by several flights from North America and northern South America.

Your UA miles are nearly worthless to Chile.

Thanks for the idea of routing through SFO (I can think of worse things...)

Last time I called AA to check on LA 601/600 (maybe 3 weeks ago), there were no saver award seats for the entire rest of the NA summer. But the res agent said that I probably called at a sub-optimal time....there's lots available 330 days out and possibly some inventory released several weeks out, but not at 90 days or so.

I should probably check again soon.

When I mentioned the UA miles, I was thinking about trading opportunities in CC.

After a bit of persistence, I finally found something I can live with --

DFW-SCL on AA, returning SCL-LIM-LAX on LAN for 50K miles total. Going to have to buy two one-way tickets LAX-DFW because there's absolutely no domestic saver inventory from LAX/SNA/BUR to DFW between 7/26 and 8/8 or so.

So the trip for two will end up costing 50K miles + $50 tax + $175 for the one-way connecting flight per person on Virgin America. Much better for us than spending ~$3300 on just the tickets, IMO.
