So is there anything Gay in Bora Bora?
GLBT Travelers - Gay Bora Bora InformationView Full Version : Gay Bora Bora Information shadesofgrey1x May 21, 11, 9:09 am So is there anything Gay in Bora Bora? splatnz May 22, 11, 2:55 am Short answer is no. Well at least nothing that I found - it's a pretty sleepy resort island. Good news is everyone is very friendly and no discrimination at all either so you will have a great time there. Fritz May 23, 11, 6:25 am No gay lfife that we could find but it's certainly gay-friendly so you shouldn't get any hassles. It's a beautiful island although somewhat dull IMHO so I wouldn't make it your only stop in French Polynesia. Vuelos May 24, 11, 9:02 am Fritz where else would you suggest? In Tahiti from 12/23 - 1/1 and have lots of points... theturbotourist May 30, 11, 2:29 am I didn't notice any gay life as such while visiting last year (Sapphire Princess cruise), but can echo previous comments that it's very laid-back and friendly. And one of the most spectacularly beautiful spots for sightseeing, snorkelling and diving. Guava Jun 27, 11, 8:21 pm I was in Moorea many years ago and a female local tour guide told me that despite the fact that Tahiti islands is a major honeymoon destination, she confided to me there is a high number of men seeking prostitutes while on the islands. I was quite shocked by her revelations considering we are talking about people who were there on honeymoon. Granted, the context of our conversation was not gay, I think what she was inferring is that there is no shortage of "opportunities" for those who are willing to pay. Despite that these islands are officially governed under French laws, the understanding in general about homosexuality is poor. While you are unlikely going to encounter anyone who will be unfriendly towards you and your same-sex partner, I wouldn't say they have an adequate understanding of what it means and many still believe this "practice" is a white man introduction that didn't exist before Europeans came. That's of course, totally untrue, but it is largely due to the lower education level on the islands, nothing more. As far as organized gay life or nightlife, at the time I was there, there was none that I can see. But there are bars where you can socialize with locals and tourists in Papeete, and they are usually quite friendly and it can be fun. I speak French so it made the communication very easy so YMMV may be different. Fritz Jul 8, 11, 7:56 pm Fritz where else would you suggest? In Tahiti from 12/23 - 1/1 and have lots of points... Sorry for the long-delayed reply. Too busy at work recently and not much time for surfing :( Bora Bora is fine for a few days but it does get a bit dull. To be honest the same is true of French Polynesia as a whole so it might make sense to combine the visit with somewhere like Easter Island (amazing) using LAN or the Cook Islands or the Marquesas which are very unspoiled indeed. That said, in French Polynesia, I like Vahine Island very much (http://www.vahine-island.com) and it's very gay friendly. Moorea is beautiful and there are some decent affordable hotels on Moorea too. And if you like to dive, the the drift dives in Rangiora are amazing Hope that helps Fritz |
