I received an email today from OS - "After a 22-year break, Austrian Airlines is once again flying to Baghdad from 8 June 2011. One of its Airbus A320 fleet will fly from Vienna to the Iraqi capital three times per week."

I've long wanted to visit Baghdad but for obvious reasons it's been off my list for the past decade. I would really like to explore the history of Baghdad and of Iraq in general. While I certainly won't be on the inaugural OS flight from VIE, I was just wondering if I might once again start to consider going to at least Baghdad if not Iraq.

Has anyone been there lately?

Is commercial service being subsidized? If they're trying to fill the plane, could it be a mileage run opportunity. This is, of course, the off-season. :)

In all seriousness, I'm guessing that the appeal of running a VIE-Baghdad flight stems from the fact that OPEC is based in VIE?

And so is the International Atomic Agency so maybe there are concerns that Saddam really did have WMD after all ... :p
