Decided not to be greedy and left the suite for someone else. The chances I will take advantage of it are slim, so didn't wanted to prepay the rate. Altough I doubt they will have issues with me cancelling even a nonrefundable rate :) Thanks.

I just booked a couple of separate weeks, one in Jan and one in Feb.
What has typically happened in years past, when a too-good-to-be-true mistake rate is snapped up by FT readers? Does the hotel cancel the reservations outright, or issue some sort of voucher, or just accept the deal?
Anyone experienced this before? I'm still a newbie in this game :)

I think in the Beijing G. case, it was the hotel that decided to honor the rate.
There's also cases where they didn't honor the price. (also booked thru booking.com)

Dear jtn,
Thank you for choosing Booking.com as your preferred travel partner.
We have been contacted by the hotel to inform you that the room rates that you have booked were incorrectly indicated during your reservation process.

We kindly request you to contact us by Friday, 27th May 2011 to advise us of your acceptance to the correct rates. If we have not received any response by this date we will assume the matter has been dealt with satisfactorily and your booking will be confirmed at the correct rates of USD171.00 per room per night.
Alternatively, if you wish to cancel your reservation, please log on to My Booking. If there is a cancellation fee involved, please contact us so that we can arrange for the required waiver.
To login you will need the pin code provided to you in your confirmation. You can use one of the two following methods:

For my dates in Feb (school vacation time in many parts of Europe, so not really a low season), I see that hotels.com have rooms in 3* with breakfast in Bali for 37 USD. Add their 10% off and the fact this this is a refundable rate - and you have a good case to argue that their rate may be not be considered as an obvious pricing mistake. BTW, is anybody here with prepaid rate who has been already charged?

The cancellable and non-cancellable conditions read:
Prepayment:
The total price of the reservation will be charged on the day of booking and is non-refundable
Prepayment:
No deposit will be charged. You have now confirmed and guaranteed your booking by credit card. All payments are to be made at the hotel during your stay, unless otherwise stated in the hotel policies or in the room conditions. Please note that your credit card may be pre-authorised prior to your arrival.
I am not doing anything except wait.
There are no pendings on my credit card.
If on/after Friday $1200 is charged instead of $70,
this may be a tiny bit of work, disputing with credit card company.

I am not interested in "fighting" what is a losing battle, as most of these are.
On the other hand, I also received the rate change email today.
I called Booking.com CS and the agent wasn't really aware of this whole debacle (no surprise). She did mention that there was a note on my reservation to "forward all requests to the Singapore office", which she did. She also said that the hotel is the one who would charge the cancellation penalty. Why this could not be canceled w/o penalty over the phone immediately is beyond me. Let's just hope their Singapore office has come up with a solution that can be implemented immediately.
If there are any charges, I am going to call Amex and have them reject. Amex is much better at dealing with these situations, esp when it's only $50 involved.. and it looks like bait and switch on paper.

I can only repeat that 10 USD is not completely clear "mistake rate',especially for this part of the world (so 7 euros for Ritz in Paris would be another story).
If this hotel would be available at PointBreaks it would cost 5K PCR points. Last year HI Maldives was on PB, so it is totally reasonable suggestion. I have just completed PC promotion and the cost of getting 5K PCR points was very close to 10USD (and that is not considering the fact I earned it through real hotel stays, not mattress runs). And on PB you could often get suite, so again very plausible case.

The issue of mistake or not...
....could be relevant in some legal proceeding,
but likely not in convincing hotel to honor.
One avenue to pursue now is to bypass
the Singapore agent sending the e-mails,
identify a higher-up in the decision chain.
Write polite but firm correspondence
requesting they honor the confirmed rate.

Ok, I need to understand the situation better - who is actually going to "pay for the party" in this case - booking.com or HI Baruna? I would certainly prefer the latter, as I hope that in this case my PC Plat can slightly increase my chances. But overall, my point is that for cases like that our chances are directly related to the number of complaints and possible negative publicity. Remember when CP near Venice was available for 1 euro (again, much clear cut case of "mistake rate")? It was honored, and I believe partly due to the fact that it a)lasted longer b) got some media attention.
Most of my bookings are prepaid, so I am really worried about the phrase from their email
that they will simply "adjust it" to 171 USD (again not stating even whether it includes any taxes, breakfast, etc) if I would not respond in less then 10 days.

I have a feeling that even if they change the rate to $171, you won't have any problem, either
1) Canceling the reservation.
2) Dispute the charge with your credit card.

For those with refundable reservations is there not the option of holding out in the hope of a more 'civilised' resolution. Well, I guess we all knew that this was coming. I think they have transferred everything to singapore as singapore is the hardest place to sue somebody. I simply replied to the email stating that they confirmed my booking and I expect it to be honored and if they charged my credit card for anymore than agreed upon I would report it as fraud. I also stated I am a platinum royal ambassador and would tell ICH that if this rate was not honored and they continued business with bookings.com, I would simply never stay in a holiday inn ever again (dont think i would be able to give up intercontinental though, royal ambassador too good to let go)

You are completely missing my point .
USD10 hotel (of 'reasonable' standing) is not common even in the cheaper parts of SE Asia, let alone at destinations which command 'first world rates' like Singapore or Bali.
Just because you have stayed in 2 hotels which honoured their mistake rates do not made them commonly available rates across SE Asia.

We seek for your kind understanding to indicate your acceptance of this one time rate tailored specially for you. Alternatively, please confirm if you would like to cancel this reservation without any penalty or compensation.
I am also going to ask them for email of someone to contact at IHG HQ.
We'll see if they go along.

I believe the Regional Director Finance Southern Asia & Korea
IHG (and the GM of the hotel in question) is Stephane Varoquier (residing in Singapore). You can easily find some contact info on twitter/facebook. ;)
Good Luck! I hope that the Hotel G scenario will be repeated ;)
The 30% "discount" is actually higher than the best available rate on the IHG website.

Instead of making a sweeping statement like this, it would be more useful if you could actually name deals which can be booked and honoured for the coming months .....

Yes I still see the $10 rate as well.
The GM Mr. Stephane Varoquier said in a letter back to me that booking.com will be in touch with me and Booking.com is saying it is the hotel that will be in touch with me. They are both passing the buck.

FWIW, the way booking.com works with IHG hotels is generally an extranet site. The hotel loads rates into Booking.com's site and Booking.com presents to the customer.
I believe that there's an option where Booking.com and interface directly with the GDS systems - but if that was the case, the rate pulled would have been available through all GDS systems (i.e. Expedia, travelocity, etc) - but it wasn't - so this hotel uses the extranet. Which means someone (more than likely at the hotel level and not at the Booking.com level) loaded the rates - and loaded them incorrectly.
I don't see how this is possibly booking.com's fault - it's got to be the hotel's fault. Ask the GM if their rate loades are done manually into booking.com or if it's a feed - either way, the hotel's responsible for the rates they present.
MrHalliday
May 23, 11, 11:24 am
I agree, no one is "passing the buck", or ten bucks, in this case.
GM is simply saying communication may pass
back thru the agent, appropriately enough.
Even so, many times the resolution has come later
in a direct e-mail from IHG. Of course, the classiest response
is when it all goes away, and they say NOTHING, like "what problem ??"
Frst-stayers then report flawless experiences.... done.
I expect we are still a few weeks away from any resolution.
A steady stream of short enquiries to the GM can help him focus, perhaps.
I have no idea how this one will turn out.
...we still have 8-9 months to book a ticket, in any case. :D

Checked T&C for booking.com which say "By making a reservation through Booking.com, you enter into a direct (legally binding) contractual relationship with the hotel at which you book. From the point at which you make your reservation, we act solely as an intermediary between you and the hotel, transmitting the details of your reservation to the relevant hotel and sending you a confirmation email for and on behalf of the hotel." So I guess we indeed need to put more pressure on GM.

Dear MrHalliday,
Thank you for choosing Booking.com as your preferred travel partner.
We have received your reply, the hotel is now offering a 60% discount for your reservations.
The room rate for your reservation would be USD68.40 per room per night.
Please understand that the Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali is a five star property participating in our Preferred Hotels program due to its high Customer Review scores and level of service.
Their normal rates for the dates you booked would be US171 per room per night. The offer that is being presented to you, although we do appreciate it is not what you expected, is indeed an excellent opportunity to stay in a luxury facility at an exceptional price.
We would like to respectfully emphasize that this offer has been tailor-made for you, as a way of apologizing for the misleading information that the hotel accidentally posted on our website.
Again, we would like to apologize for the inconvenience, and we hope you will accept the hotel's offer. We seek for your kind understanding to indicate your acceptance of this exceptional price by Friday, 3rd June 2011.
If we have not received any response by this date we will assume the matter has been dealt with satisfactorily and your booking will be confirmed at the discounted rate of USD68.40 per room per night.
We look forward to your reply and truly hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.

How naďv... There was an error price and everybody knew that. If a vendor reacts within a reasonable matter of time after the booking, he can legally deny the transaction with the wrong price. Plain and simple. There is nothing to discuss and nothing to "put preassure"

I guess IHG loyalty program gives lots of opportunities to have rooms for about 10 USD per night. I have recently completed their promo and for the total cost of approx 350 USD received about 150k points. If used on PB stays that will be about 12 USD per night (not countring the "original" nights). Yes, PB list is getting slimmer, but almost everytime it is possible to get something at major tourist destination, at least in Europe.

It really is a great hotel and I prefer it in many ways to the IC on Bali. It is closer to where 'the action' is. F&B is much better than the IC and in the Kuta general area this is my favourite hotel. F&F rate is around $150 so at $68 that is great. Don't forget that you have to pay 21% tax on that rate. That is standard in Bali.

1) No, but you earn PC points on extra spendings (e.g. food or spa treatment). And sometimes even non-qualified rates count for PC promos.
2) Yes, email GM and ask to link it with your PCR#. I always do it with my priceline stays.

If the hotel loaded an incorrect tariff, then it would seem to be on their shoulders to make their customers happy. Especially given the non-refundable language, and T&C of the some of the options of the booking.
I've stayed at a number of different IHG properties in Indonesia, often on Pointbreak or award nights. They usually get paid $18-$20 per night for these award stays. I usually get breakfast and lounge access on these award stays, too. $10 or $25 is still in the same ballpark.
IHG has had many super dupe deals in the past (.01 Euro for two nights) in Venice, many times where you could get suites, even presidential suites, for the same amount of points. In the end, they have always honored them, in all the cases that I've been involved in.

I am not saying that you should not try and make them honour the deal (hell, I have in the past) but to say the the HI Baruna is a $25 property is ridiculous. Bali is not the same as Indonesia in general and hotel prices there are high. The HI Baruna is a 4 star property and I hope most of you will get some kind of deal for the hotel's mistake to experience that for yourselves.
I doubt whether it could be successfully argued that $10 is not an obvious pricing mistake. I have challenged the ones saying it was to find me any property on Bali for that price. Not a chance. Not even for $50,-.
All I was trying to convey is that if they offer you $60 per night you still have an amazing deal. I have been there many times and it is a wonderful hotel.
The other thing is that this is a game which we sometimes play successfully and sometimes not. I just find it a bit ridiculous to get all high and mighty if a hotel decides that a price less than 10% of its BAR is obviously a pricing mistake.

I have not responded to booking.com emails yet altering the rate to $171. Booking.com's presumption that no response from an email with new contract terms will allow them to charge $171/night if I decide to no show is unprecedented.

Well, if your post was intended to be a little sarcastic then I do humbly apologize. :) I just always get annoyed by these 'let's get the b@stards!' threads when a pricing error has so obviously been made. You play the game and sometimes you win and sometimes you've got to let go.OK, we're cool !
Yes, if you review upthread you will see me
getting upset at newbies yelling "ATTACK ATTACK" ! :td:
I have enjoyed quality stays at 1 baht per night,
yet walked away from other 5*'s confirmed at a few pennies a night.
At this time looking forward to the Beijing G for roughly $30-35 p/n.
Yet I may cancel if I can get friends to join me in Zamboanga. :o
Anyway, back on topic, I have no idea
if this will play out at $10, $25, $60, or $78, or whatever.
It doesn't make much difference in my decision,
as the TPAC premium ticket is the biggest outlay, even if "just" miles.
Yet, I have a feeling, the longer this plays out,
the more likely the issue is now bouncing around at some IHG HQ.
At 9-10 months away, I am fine with waiting whatever time
it takes IHG to make a coherent decision. I have even said that
in my e-mail response to the GM, where I simply advised him to not
charge my credit card on my one NR res, as it will just waste our time.
A bit strange, however, was the response
(this was all more than a week ago....)
Dear Mr. Halliday,
I do apologise for the late reply as I was away on sick leave.
I wanted to acknowledge receipt of your emails and to let you know
that I’ll come back with answers shortly.
In the meantime, I would appreciate if you could share
the latest communication you had with booking.com.
Many thanks
Kind regards,

Dear MrHalliday,
We are contacting you regarding your reservation at the Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali. Again, I would like to express my sincere apologies on behalf of the hotel for the incorrect room rates indicated.
However, to ensure that the appropriate level of service is provided to you, we have mediated with the hotel on your behalf. The hotel has now confirmed that they will honor the room rate of USD10 per room per night for your reservation.
In addition, the hotel would like to inform you of the following conditions:
1. Modifications of the guest name is not allowed
2. Reservations made for Ocean rooms: The specific room type cannot be guaranteed but will be allocated based on run of house
3. Guest must present the official confirmation email at check-in

Why do you need to scavenge for unused mistake rate bookings, when $10 "nice hotels" can be easily found in Bali (or elsewhere in Indonesia) as you claimed ;)

I have one prepaid NR res ($70 the week incl. breakfast)
which I enquired about cancelling and getting the $70 back,
to my surprise the GM said no.
No big deal, I can use the stay,
my CX F res YVR-DPS remains tempting
and my second res is cancellable w/o penalty.
However, I was surprised they would not
free up the room-week for $70. Usually one can negotiate that.

Booze was pricey but found everything else rather reasonable. The Envy restaurant serves some excellent food and is dirt cheap. I can highly recommend the Mahi-Mahi which was a steal for around Ł4- with two sides and a sauce.

I had arranged a hotel car some time ago. The rate quoted was $8.00 though I think this may have increased as I overheard reception say 100,000 IDR. Fixed price airport car is 50,000 IDR payable at the airport taxi counter.
Unfortunately the hotel car was not present. I searched all over arrivals but after 20 minutes queued for the airport taxi. Hotel offered to pay for the taxi when I mentioned it at check-in but it's peanuts. They did however provide free transport back to the airport.
The hotel has a shop. It is well priced. You'd struggle to find most things cheaper outside.

Got here yesterday, and everything was fine.
Decent room, with a nice balcony. Pool view, with I guess, ocean beyond that.
As an RA given the choice of snack bag (1 Aqua, and one snack choice, in a little carrying bag), or 500 PC point cert. Took the snack bag. 500,000 IDR ($55) deposit for incidentals taken.
Given card for some sort of management welcome night, but missed it as I was out, and got back after 5:30pm.
Like the bed so far, bathroom pretty good too. Toilet has sprayer system installed. Open style shower, that you can view from the bedroom, if you don't have the drape closed.
Breakfast was a bit weak. Not horrible, of course, but I'd feel ripped off (in Indonesia) by paying $18 or so for it. Since mine was included with my rate, I'll try not to complain too much about it. :)
Biggest drawback so far, is a bunch of kids running around upstairs. Had some Indonesia relatives come along for the first week. I tried to explain to them, that their room nearby cost more than 4 times more than my room did. I don't think they really got it.
No free internet, it seems. Luckily brought two different 3G modems with us from Jakarta. One using Telkomcel won't get a signal at all. The other using Smartfren, seems to work about 1/2 the speed as in Jakarta. I guess at a cost of $5.50, I'll be far ahead using this method than paying the hotel for the daily internet.
Ordered room service last night. Not too impressed. Pricing not horrible, but food was nothing to get too excited about. Chicken breast was pretty dry. No ketchup or sambal sauce brought with the potato sides.
Most meal options are in the $10-$20 range. Some, like the chicken breast, are about $7. Prices quoted are nett prices, including service and tax.

I don't recall what the hotel is charging for airport transport, but it is quite close, and not really expensive. Since we had two dropoffs, and 5 people, we got a Blue Bird/Golden Bird van to bring us for 100,000 IDR. I'd guess the prepaid taxi service from the airport would be 50,000 IDR or so. If you could find a standard metered taxi, it would be only $2-$3.

About the internet, there is some trick involving the nearest bar. One guy mentions it here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/17081445-post12.html).
He shares it via PM, so i'll respect his wish and wont post it publicly. PM me either me or him I guess for details.

I was quoted US$10 by the hotel for one way airport transfer

[QUOTE=17940117] thanks for the report and the taxi update. does anyone think the hotel cares if I generate revenue by paying them extra for car service? we are getting in next week.

Airport -Hotel we paid 50 000 Rupees for an inofficial shuttle, official one would be the same, but we didn´t care.
Taxis are cheaper, but you have to walk away from the airport since they don´t operate there.
For savings of 3 USD the effort is too high.
We were charged 60 000 Rupees for the trip to the airport using the hotel shuttle.

I doubt you paid 60,000 Rupees. :)
Sometimes you can find someone dropping someone else off, and jump in quick. There's a bit of a taxi mafia at this airport, so not all the taxi's will do it.

I left a week ago. Weather pretty sunny most if the time. Occasionally rainy, but not for long.
I think the 23 of March is the day of silence, where everything is closed.

Does the week of free wi fi for a drink still work at the beach bar. By a drink get code and use for 24 hours. When expired simply use again and again. Bargain and better than nothing.

They changed the code in the restaurant every day. I'm sure that they'd give it to you if you just asked for it. Friendly folk. Prices actually quite reasonable. Love that Mahi-Mahi with two sides for about $7 including tax and tip.
