Hi,
We are planning to visit Ghana this December using award tickets, so we would like to get our free stopover in another country & see safari, animals and beautiful nature. The problem is we don't have a lot of money. We are willing to go the rough but still safe way (ie hiking/camping etc, no luxury hotel is needed)...what is our cheapest way to do this? What is a workable budget for two people? Where should we go?

Thank you for the link, unfortunately none of the dates will work for us.
What route are you flying and what are your options for stopovers? Hard to think of possibilities without this info.
Unfortunately, West Africa is not generally known for game-viewing. Have you checked with your hotel or a Ghanian tourism authority for ideas? There may be something in the region. Maybe Senegal or the Gambia? Several years ago I worked in Abidjan for 9 months, and took a tour to Kenya's game parks, but that was a long trip (west-east Africa or vice versa has long been as difficult as flying from Europe). I don't remember hearing about any game viewing anywhere in West Africa but there may be some (not like East or South Africa, but better than nothing). You don't say why you chose Ghana, so I hope that part of the trip works out for you. There is some interesting history there, but as far as I know, going on a real safari would require you to fly to South Africa or, if you're adenturous and can find flights, perhaps Rwanda or Uganda or one of the Congos. Of course, none of those places would likely be a stopover.

Hi SoCal,
We are going to Ghana because a friend from there invited us to visit when she goes home (over Christmas), but we also would like to see safari (which I understand would be in E or S Africa). So far, the stopover in East Africa I have been able to come up with is Tanzania, so I guess I will focus on trying to find safari tours there. If you have any other suggestions that will be great.

Tanzania is great for safari, if you can stop there, you will find plenty of options, from one day game to multiple days into different levels of lodging..

Any specific tour operator you would recommend? We should book the trip before we go I assume?
