Los Angeles - PHX to SNA or is LAX better?

According to Google maps, its about one hour drive from LAX to Santa Ana, CA.
Not having used SNA before, I was wondering if I would be better off using LAX from PHX or should I just fly directly into SNA?
Thanks.

PHX-LAX $123 (UA) $89 (WN)
PHX-SNA $148 (US) $89 (WN)
Car rental LAX $345
Car rental SNA $299*
It may only be about an hour's drive but it's not a fun drive by any stretch of the imagination  .

I guess it would also depend on where your final destination is. Presumably you would be able to fly USAir or Southwest non-stop to either destination (and likely other airlines too).

Hi,
American Eagle now fly PHX-LAX on AA flight numbers on a CR7 ( not a bad aircraft for a hour flight time)-Timetabled time is c 1hr 20 mins

Aside from the drive south from LAX to Santa Ana...LAX itself can be troubling as an airport...Santa Ana Airport (also known as Orange County Airport and John Wayne Airport) is a pleasant airport compared to LAX.

If going to anywhere around Orange County, I greatly prefer SNA. Much less congested than LAX, no need to deal with the drive on the 405 (which can be a mess in and of itself), renting a car is much easier at SNA (it is in the lower-level of the on-site garage, versus having to deal with a shuttle bus to an offsite location).
Of the large airports in SoCal, SNA and BUR are by far my favorites for ease of use (I haven't used LGB yet).

It all depends on your eventual final destination. Where do you plan to sleep that night?
Going to Huntington Beach? Fly to Santa Ana.
Going to Manhattan Beach? Fly to LAX.

I can't see any advantage to using LAX...
I have some...
1. There are more flight for PHX-LAX compare to PHX-SNA.
2. A higher DB chance (For most people, SNA is last stop - but for LAX, some people may still need another connections).
3. Choice of rental cars
"Better" in wht way? What time of day and day of week (i.e. is rush hour involved)? Rental car prices may be lower out of LAX. SNA a smaller airport and getting to a rental car involves a short walk, without a shuttle bus. What we don't know is why you are hesitating to use SNA.

We can't really say which is better option until the OP provides more details like
- time and day
- final destination
- aptitude/ability for using public transportation or driving

If your final destination is in OC then SNA is the better choice.
I used to fly quite a bit to PHX from SNA.
Both US Air (previously America West) and Southwest fly the SNA, LAX-PHX route.
Although googlemaps tells you it's 1 hr between the 2 airports it can be more than that depending on traffic, time of day, weather, construction, etc....
