Finnair Plus - Silver level for 60€?

I just noticed that I'm about to reach Silver level. I'm currently at 39'031 points, so less than 1'000 missing. My follow up period ends on the 30.06.2011 and I'm located in Vaasa.

I'm heading for Helsinki in 2 weeks, but since I'm student, I was going for the train at roughly 60€ (both ways). Now due the possible Silver, I started considering Finnair flights; a return flight would be some 120€. Is it worth the money?

A return flight should give me at least 2x500 pts, but I've noticed that some times single flights give 1'000 pts. Is there anyway I can check this in advance? (such a flight would allow me to combine a single flight with a train trip the other way).

Last question: if I use points to book this flight, I will not receive any points for the flight, right?

You can book one way in Y (usually quite expensive, more than €300) or return trip in any other booking class (can be quite reasonable, but anyway more than €100) to get the 1000 reward/level points needed. When making the reservation, you see the booking classes after having selected the desired flights and prices and proceed to the confirmation screen.

The other option is:

That way you loose 5000 points from your reward points but get 1667 level points and the silver card (lounge entry with AY flights, more luggage allowance, business class check in...).

I thought it's in blocks of 5000 level points purchased, not 5000 reward points used - so silver would cost 15000 points in this case?

Right. 15000 reward points in return of 5000 level points is the minimum. Not worthwhile since 4000 level points would be wasted in this case.

15 000 points + no taxes or YQ spends, and 1000 reward points lost, so 16 000 altogether... for that OP would save the price of a domestic return + a lot of time...

Might not be optimal conversion, but still waaaay better than the usual 20 000 + taxes + rip-off YQ that is the usual burn rate.

The question should be is 16 000 AY award points worth 120€ + the time lost flying back and forward for the OP, not how many points is "wasted".
