I would be happy with BR, but looks like the get the ugly sister, CI.

Would not VA be the obvious choice for this region? [Edit, not really the same region, but as close as I can come]

Or to be simple, the entire Virgin collection.

There are some of us, even very frequent flyers, who don't have the two letter abbreviations for every airline in the world memorized, and who don't know how to quickly decode them (or who don't have the patience to decode long lists one-by-one). How about posting your "dream teams" in human-readable form so us mere mortals can enjoy the fun? :)

Sorry. Quantas for me. Just Quantas for coverage between Australia and Europe speaking as a STElite who's about to relocate temporarily. ST has too much coverage over Europe (the europeans may disagree) compared to what we have down under.

And it'll never happen so I can only dream.

Gotcha. And some carry it with them and others. Some never find it the final destination while some never had anything to check at the gate or anywhere else. FT is a microcosm of the world we live in.

Wouldn't bringing the Virgin group on board take care of most of what QF could bring? There'd be TPAC and Oz/NZ from VA and EU-Down Under via VS. To get more EU connections working through AMS and CDG, perhaps a focus city or something in SIN or HKG where you could seamlessly switch from VA/VS to AF/KL or vice versa. (Oh, and it's Qantas, btw, no u.)

I didn't know people were going to lust after airlines already hitched to other alliances. An alliance could tempt an airline out of another alliance. But that is a different involving a different sets of issues and caters more to personal taste then widening the coverage of Skyteam.

P.S. I am assuming that the Virgin Australia and/or Virgin Atlnatic and their affiliates are on the way to joining Skyteam.

Skyteam also needs a stronger alliance with full accruaa and redemption.
If Skyteam gets 9W, then UL might be redundant.

NW, and Skyteam have been dating MH for a long time. NW had even started a flight to KUL. You can earn miles on AF/KL FF programme. DL is just afraid to make a commitment. Is MH not good enough for DL?

What MH can do, can be done by 9W also. The same thing goes for UL. Buy bagging 9W bings in a decent airline and opens up opportunities to earn miles between India and other points in Asia. I am not agai8nst MH, but if there is a choice between MH and 9W (or even AI) I would prefer the other.
One or more of EK, EY, QR would be stupendous.

Yes, Srilanka does have an airline. I am told Sri Lanka is a good place to visit. Few years ago,you could buy a really cheap RTW ticket starting in CMB.
(Colombo, Sri Lanka)

Emirate, Etihad and Qatar Airways are said to have really nice premium cabin.

Jet Airways is not a Pakistani LCC. But a full fledged airline from India, thought to be much better than AI (Air India). I found AI to be quite decent in economy, certainly better than DL. I don;t know if they still do it, but a few years ago, they offered PDB (non alcoholic) in coach too. More flights on Jet would have meal service than DL does, even in coach.

I've always wanted to go to Sri Lanka but the civil strife has always put me off. Come to think of it, I've not heard anything in the news in years. I should research it. It may have settled down. Perhaps it's time to research a trip. I wonder if SkyTeam can somehow get me there? :)

For a short while, Emirates was available to Delta for SkyMiles awards and, I believe, some folks were even able to get Suites. As usual, Delta quickly figured out that people were actually redeeming SkyMiles for something desirable, and quickly dumped Emirates. I still can't figure out why Delta hasn't picked up RyanAir as a SkyMiles award partner. Probably because Delta figures that RyanAir is too premium for Delta customers

9W is good for the subcontinent.
MH is as good for the Pacific rim option.
The virgin group will patch some holes to Australia but not NZ.
Any One of the gulf carriers will make it work well.
Given Dubai's cash problems, the Abu Dhabi one may be more stable over the long term.

Yeah, it seems that ST doesn't make good choices in who it entrains into it. That or you have airlines that are joining the alliance to give themselves a boot in the fanny to up their standard or so they can lean on the better carriers among them (you pick).

Hongkong Airways? Other than the Virgin group these choices don't give more choices, add few destinations or increase mileage earning opportunity significantly. The distances involved for destinations covered by the regional airlines are so small that not having the ability to earn miles is not a big loss.

They have to decide to choosing Jet Airways or Air India will joins into ST or Star Alliance. That will be a logical choices for both of them. Why can't have one the time? Lets wait and see. Whether if AI or 9W will expect to joins into Alliance or not. They have 1 carrier in Indian and not 2. It should have to keep separate the SkyTeam or Star.

More realistic, perhaps, than the big three EK, EY, QR, and certainly far better than SV. These are both nice carriers (well, it seems -- I have never flown WY) that would add the intra-GCC dimension, excellent coverage of the Indian sub-continent, and very viable connection options from Europe to east Asia.

I have never flown Oman, but I did fly GF once. They codeshared with AA on the transatlantic portion. AA would not even give miles for the legs flown on GF. I did not like them very much. I have also never flown EK, EY or QR, although I was booked to fly QR between LHR and HKG, so I don;t know if EK,EY and QR are any better. I am relying on those who have travelled these airlines.

MH probably looked at VN's hub in SGN and GA's in CGK and figured they were too close (much like SIN and BKK in Star would have been). In OW the closest hubs would be Hong Kong and Australia. A couple of years ago there was merger speculation involving Malaysian and Qantas so not surprising QF being their sponsor into OW.

Maybe someone at ST dropped the ball but probably strategically better to get VN and GA - much larger domestic markets with travel growth potential.

Very extremely disappointed the news for AF & MH didn't go for Skyteam. MH was more favorable to joins the SkyTeam. MH wants to made a decision to joins oneworld Alliance. This is not good day for Skyteam. DL will be no longer codeshare & SkyMiles FF program.

It wasn't a part of Skyteam and DL flyers couldn't earn MQMs on MH anyway. For me, it's not a big loss.
MH wanted to join SkyTeam. Why was it made to wait?
SkyTeam does desperately need an Indian carrier. Either of 9W or AI would do.

Excellent news, finally something good. Here I was worried one of the pretty girls might get snapped up by DL & Co.

You have to depend on airlines for your dating needs? :D

Actually, AI will expected to joining into Star Alliance sometime in July 2011. If the scheduled is running on-time to get one step closer AI entry into Star Alliance.

I have travelled on GF many years ago, I liked KU better.
