Can someone in the know please post the current condition of HWY after the road slid down the hill in March between Carmel and Cambia? Is it reopened yet?
Schedule?
thanks

On the basis of the above it seems you have the option of travelling down H-1 until about 10 miles before you get to Gorda. Then there is a turnoff left onto a steep and winding mountain road that finally takes you over to H-101 somewhere near King City

The mountain road is not for those of a nervous disposition !

Looks to be closed 4-6 weeks from May 5. Here's an article from the Monterey Herald that will help. The major Amgen bike race for May 19 had to be rerouted around the closed section. See esp. pars. 8 and 9 of the article.

I hate that I'm not going to use the PCH on this anniversary trip. driving from sfo to carmel first nite, then down to Pismo beach (will have to use 101?), then eventually back up to monterey and up to sfo. wanted to stop in cambria on the way back up. I guess I can use 46 to go back across to 101 after cambria visit then take 101 up to monterey.
Mapquest doesn't really show any other roads I can use further north to cut across.
any ideas are appreciated, and thanks for all the help so far.

FYI, many locals are using this site to read about and discuss the highway work: http://bigsurkate.wordpress.com/

There is already an existing thread addressing this problem:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/california/1197029-driving-up-down-california.html

FWIW, I recommend Highway 68 as a way to get from Monterey/Carmel over to SR101. It is much more scenic than the Mapquest route.
