Wife and I are flying IAD-MUC-ADB. The first leg is UA and the second is LH on a separate PNR. On the return we fly IST-MUC-ORD on LH and then UA also separate PNRs. I assume we can check bags all the way through and not pick up in MUC. Correct?

Yes, if UA and LH do it for you. You might have to push the agents to do that though :).

UA and LH will do it for you with no problem. They have interline agreement and just have both travel details handy, so that they can properly route the baggage.

Thanks all. I should have been clearer in my question. In addition to interlining I was wondering whether I had to pick up the bags in MUC and then recheck (as in the US) or whether I don't worry about them in MUC and just pick them up in ADB.

no need to pick up the luggage in MUC when you have checked it thru. Unlike the 'land of the free' transit pax don't have to carry their luggage nor pass thru immigration or customs. You will stay airside and just walk to the ADB gate. If you don't have your onward boarding pass you can collect it at the transfer check in desk. Make sure to show them the stub of the checked thru luggage so they add it to the record.
