Hawaii - Roy's on Maui moved?
I recommended Roy's restaurant to some friends heading to Maui and the friends that they're visiting said that it closed down. Looking around on the web the best I can figure out is that the Roy's that used to be in South Kihei on Maui moved to north of Lahaina but is operating just fine at the new location.
Is that what happened? or is it really closed?
Last I was at the south kihei location was 2.5 years ago so anything could have happened.
That location closed at least two years ago. I like Roy's, but that location made no sense. That's a mid-range shopping center, accessible only by car. Roy's was too pricey for that location. They should have been in Wailea or maybe the southern coastal end of Kihei, or just skipped South Maui altogether.

I agree that it didn't make sense but it was convinient when we were visiting the south side. :) If it closed two years ago than it was in business for at least the prior five to seven years. It was busy every time we were there but I wonder if they were losing money all the time.
So the location north of Lahaina is operating just fine I take it?

It's still on their website. Maybe call them to be sure. http://www.roysrestaurant.com/locations/

I can confirm that there is a location in Kahana on the second floor of a shopping centre adjacent to the main highway. It's on the same side of the MacDonalds'. We just drove by it on spring break, and my 5 year old son pointed it out.
The Roy's Kahana seems to have been doing fine over the past 6 years I've been visiting there.

That location makes a lot more sense -- plenty of high-end condos, homes and resorts nearby. The Kihei location was a good five miles from the resorts in Wailea, and there is no shortage of nice restaurants much closer.

The rent in Kihei is a fraction of that in Wailea..
The shops at Wailea has 4 restaurants which seems to have been there for an eternity. Often, restaurants has specific exclusivities (as I'm in commercial real estate) that prevent direct or certain competitors within the mall. Those restrictions may have prevent additional restaurants from leasing space at Shops at Wailea.
Hence, Kihei makes sense along the main streets. Those who stay on resorts like to get out of the hotel for dinner sometimes and whether driving to Wailea or stoping a nearby Kihei won't make much of a difference.

FYI
That ex Roy.s spot in Kihei is being remodeled as we type into a Mainland Chain Restaurant called Ruby Tuesday

Quite the drive now accross the island to get a Roy's fix.. now 100% absolutely confirmed. Hopefully, Roys' can find another location to target the high spenders in Wailea.

Nope, but a better fit for that location. I agree that Roy's didn't make sense where it was in Kihei. There is an Outback in that same mall, so a Ruby Tuesday's will fit right in.
