Hi

My friend needs to get from Union Station Washington DC to marshall virginia zip 20115 On Sunday afternoon, or he can ride over to Reagan National Airport.

Looking on Google map it does not seem to go there

Any ideas ?

OHH he has his road bike with him so he can ride a little ways if he needs to but the bike will need to go on public transport or the shuttle

Thanks for your help

PS.....he was going to ride his bike the whole 50+ miles and I am trying to make it easier on him , but he can ride 10-20 if he has too...

What little public transit there is out to Fauquier County is strictly commute hours. He could get Amtrak to Manassas or Culpepper, I suppose, but I don't know of a way to get any closer than that without a car.

The bike is an issue as well, as there are rules about it going on metro (of which I do not have specifics),but would expect that they are not allowed at certain times of day (weekend likely okay) If a bus doesn't have a rack, it wouldn't work then, either. That is deep in the suburbs and as mentioned above, public transport is not readily available all they way.

A rental car is the best option, the pretty ride starts about 20 miles into the ride and is a really nice area to bike in.

A rental does not work because he is going there to buy a car !

what is the farthest that Super shuttle might go with a shared van ?
it seems they go to Manassas but I do not know what other towns are on his way , Manassas is off the direct route some

thanks for your help

Super Shuttle may take him all the way, it may not be cheap and would take a lot (a huge lot) of time ... question is would they take the bike? Call them and ask would be my suggestion. Another option is to take a taxi to some point at which point he bikes the rest of the way.

Update
In doing some generic google searches, I came across a company called Timely Express. They don't seem to have a website but are referenced all over as providing shuttle service between the airports/union station and fauquier county -- they might be worth a call at 540-347-6488 or use the listed email of TimelyExpressVan@aol.com

I know nothing of the company other than it came from the search. G'Luck.

Thanks for the lead on Timely Express.

He is taking the bike because he is a "biker" and rides all over the mountains near his house,
He is buying a car near Marshal and driving it back to Colorado , and I am sure he will get his bike out a few times just to have a ride.

The closer he gets by Shuttle Van the less he needs to ride his bike and hopefully will not have to ride in the dark,

I am sure he can take the wheels off the bike if that was a deal breaker for super shuttle,

Love to hear any other options,

thanks

I was looking up some alternatives for you using transit, but that is going to be darn near impossible on a Sunday.

He could take Amtrak to Manasas. Perhaps the Seller will pick him up there?

Or he could rent a car from Enterprise at Reagan, make pre-arrangements to drop it off in Warrenton, Va, and have the Seller meet him in Warrenton, or follow him to Warrenton and exchange cars there.

Vre is an option if it runs on the weekend, it should be a little less than Amtrak

Thanks guys for your local help

The car seller is not even going to Manasas to pick him up, He lives 10 miles into the country from Marshall and "might" go there ,

So my friend is pretty much on his own and I would just like to get him as close as possible ,

He is taking the train from Denver to DC with his bike,

what is VRE ?

thanks

Sorry, Virginia rail express. A commuter rail that goes from union station into Virginia. I just looked, but that is only weekdays so Amtrak would be the only possibility.

MSS is the station code. You might want to do a check for mileage from there to Marshall, it might be okay but you need to first find out if they would let you take the bike.

on Route 66 past Centreville is there another large town before Marshall that Super Shuttle might still have a shared Van to ? Gainesville or Haymarket maybe ? before they think its too far to go for one person....

He really needs to go to Orlean which looks the same distance to Warrenton as Marshall,

thanks again

No idea of what super shuttle limits are, but I would recommend trying that time express one first as it is the area they serve

It doesn't. Marshall will be impossible via public transit - on a Sunday (and with a bike).

UPDATE:

I called Timely Express , $135 and they will pick him up at the train station and take him to the house in Orlean ,

So since he does not have to ride his bike anywhere now I talked him into leaving it at home and taking a small suitcase with tools and spare parts he might need for the 1600 mile drive back ,

I really want to thank you for your local help, thats what makes Flyertalk so good ,

I will let you know how Timely Express when he gets back,

Thanks again

This better be one heck of a car he's buying!!

Make sure he signs up for Amtrak Rewards before he leaves (there is a promo right now for extra sign up points if he's a new member). g'luck with his journey.

Well its an expensive car , and pretty rare so thats why he is going to this much trouble , but we are car guys so doing things like this or driving 1000 miles to look at a car is like out mileage run :)

or going to a car show half way across the world !

It doesn't. Marshall will be impossible via public transit - on a Sunday (and with a bike).

It pains me (since I frequently bring my nice road bike onto transit) to say that this is pretty much true. One can check a bike on Amtrak, but not to Manassas; one can take a bike on some VRE trains, but they don't run on weekends. Commuter buses head out that way, but also don't run on weekends. The only local option for bikes on transit on weekends is Metro, and Marshall is 40+ miles from Vienna, Va. via some ugly suburban roads (and some pretty country roads).

Check out the referral thread over in the AGR forum for 500 points. Most trips in May earn triple points!

Hi

well here is his report, took the train to DC , Arrived Sunday afternoon, was picked up on time by the shuttle Timely Express, and he said the driver / owner was a really nice guy ,

He was VERY happy he did not take his bike , he had no idea how hilly that area is , plus there is no shoulder on the road for a bike rider,

Made it out to Orleans , finished the deal on the car and he was on the road by 6pm , took him 2 days to drive back to Denver,

No problems on the drive back and he got a little adventure out of it , He is 71 years old in great condition, but sometimes I need to save him from himself ,

Anyway all is good and he wanted me to thank you all for the help,
