I will be in this area next week, and I am not sure if it is a downtown like area, where I can just get a taxi from the Airport and then during the week everything is in walking distance. Or is this location a bit more widespread and requires a rental car.
Reason I ask, is that the company i do work with would like me to use shuttles/taxi first before getting a rental car, but I only will do that if I am in a city. So I tend to always book a rental car. However, I have found being in a certain area that I shouldn't have gotten the rental car. Like NYC, Chicago, SF, Victoria BC, Boston, etc.
Thanks
Mark

Look at a map. Metairie is in the sort of no-man's-land / arterial / strip mall zone between the airport (west, in Kenner) and the city proper (east). You should have a car.

Sorry to hear that your stay here will be limited to the Metairie area. Metairie is a typical suburb and I doubt that you'll be doing much walking. You will definitely need a car.

Depending on where you stay in Metairie, you may or may not need a rental car. For example, I stay pretty often at the Marriott at Lakeway and there are decent options within pretty decent walking distance, at least IMHO. Taxis to downtown are about $20 each way. But overall, yes I would rent a car.

I'm actually being serious: please enlighten this lifelong resident of the "decent", or even, any options available in "pretty decent walking" distance of this hotel. Especially, now, with all of the heavy duty road construction on N. Causeway Blvd.
Hopefully, you are talking about something (albeit, unknown to me) within just a couple of blocks, taking into consideration the heat that we are starting to experience. There are some decent restaurants (i.e., Drago's) and Lakeside Mall within "walking distance", but I'd rather not. Each person has their own "walking distance" with which they are comfortable. Maybe the OP can give us his/her definition. Also, which hotel is the OP considering?

Not really. A car will really be necessary, unless the OP wants to cab everywhere.

Yes, I was referring to Dragos, restaurants at Lakeside, and China Rose isn't bad at all either. I definitely wouldn't walk down Causeway. Severn is good for crossing West Esplanade since there is a controlled crosswalk. IMO, the other side streets aren't too bad to walk and those restaurants are within walking distance. To me, they are just several blocks. But you are right, I should specified that it is quite a few blocks since everyone's definition of walking distance is different.

Sorry, but, I still disagree. It's more than several blocks from the Marriott to Drago's. It's a little over a mile.

That is all on fairly busy streets with little or no pleasant walking spaces. Cars coming off the Causeway bridge are zooming by at break neck speeds and crossing over West Esplanade, even with a walk signal is still not pedestrian friendly. If staying in Metairie for more than a night I would rent a car.
