TORONTO (Dow Jones)--WestJet Airlines Ltd.'s (WJA.T) first-quarter earnings were well ahead of year-earlier levels and once again handily beat analyst estimates as the market absorbed fare increases put in place to offset rising fuel costs.
The Calgary-based low-cost air carrier, Canada's second-largest airline behind Air Canada (AC.B.T), said revenue per available seat mile, or RASM, rose 12.1%, mostly due to a significant yield improvement and slight load-factor growth.
WestJet posted a first-quarter profit of C$48.2 million or 34 Canadian cents a share, well ahead of a restated C$2.4 million or 2 Canadian cents earned in the year earlier quarter. The Thomson Reuters mean estimate was for a profit of 18 Canadian cents.
