Florida - Fort Lauderdale / FLL: Where to Stay & What to do?

Seeking some help selecting a neighbourhood to stay in and some activities pre & post cruise this December. We're flying on points so our dates were limited: flying into FLL Sunday morning on a redeye with the cruise departing the next day and the cruise returns the following week on a Friday morning with us flying back early on Sunday. So, essentially one Sunday pre-cruise and a Friday & Saturday post cruise.

We're likely going to try to Priceline/Hotwire a hotel but open to other suggestions.
We've been in the Fort Lauderdale area twice before but only stopping at Sawgrass Mills. This trip, we'd like to make another trip to Sawgrass and if the Florida Panthers are playing, we might want to catch a game. Not sure what else to do. We're not really "hang out at the beach all day" people but wouldn't mind strolling a nice beach promenade. We generally prefer walking thru interesting neighbourhoods, commercial districts, and markets. Always looking for good eats too.

Should we rent a car? Looking to primarily use it to get to site to site around Fort Lauderdale if public transit isn't a viable option. Not interested tho, in driving down to Miami as we've spent enough time there already on previous trips.

Also, links to good websites or FT threads would be appreciated. Haven't found a lot of info following a few cursory searches over the last few days, tho I could be blind.

TIA

Have you been to the Everglades? It would require renting a car but December is the perfect month to see the stuff.

That seems like such an obvious idea but we hadn't considered the Everglades! :D Thanks, going to have to research the logistics of that.

Here's a thread on the Everglades that has some info. Hope it helps.

You may want to keep an eye on the Coconut Grove Grapevine (http://coconutgrovegrapevine.blogspot.com/) as your trip gets closer for information on what to do in the Coconut Grove neighborhood in Miami; there's lots of nice restaurants, shops, and events here, and it's not super-touristy like South Beach :)
