I was thinking to apply for the DM VISA card, but am deterred by the transaction fee on charges in foreign currency. Is anyone else bothered by these charges? Should I not be?

I've got the card, and the charges are so small, it's not a big deal as far as I'm concerned.

Well, they're small, but annoying. My last trip racked up a good couple grand in overseas expenses. The fee was in the $20 - $35 range. Small, but noticeable.

They're very annoying. The only card I carry that doesn't charge these fees is Diners Club.

</font>Diners Club adds 1% to the transaction when charges in foreign currency are converted to US$.

Visa and MC charge 1%, and the issuing bak is allowed to charge and additional 1 or 2% on top of that. MBNA and CapitalOne don't add anything to the Visa/MC 1%. I read that Providian charges up to 4% extra on some cards.

I just checked it for a trip overseas in April, and the US, AA and UA Visa cards all add 3% total (Visa + Issuing bank) and AmEx adds 2%. Probably better to simply use the ATM.

It's been about a year since I was overseas; one of my CC's had started seperating out the conversion fees into a once-daily itemization on the bill (maybe BofA for the US Visa but I don't remember). I know there had been one or two class-action suits about this and I'm curious as to whether it's easier to tell nowadays. As I recall BofA used to only itemize the US Dollar amount of the charge without any reference to the charge amount in foreign currency.

Other cards at least said "GBP XX.XX USD YY.YY" so you could approximate the conversion fee with a little research.
