I’ve been anxious to take this trip to LAS this week from PHL to see what, if anything, they’re doing to position themselves against the impending arrival of SW. Here are some observations.

Outbound on 642 with dinner. F/A was one of the best in a long time…almost militant in getting jackets as you boarded and providing pre-flight drinks (Finlandia and green limes abound!). Service throughout the flight was constant—always walking back and forth to check on pax. Dinner: last to be asked so I don’t know the options but I had Mediterranean Chicken, which was rather good. Salad was a bit limp but roasted red peppers were a nice touch. Cheesecake for dessert. Later the snack basket came around more than once; never an empty glass or water bottle the whole five hours. We arrived ˝ hour early.

Return on 668 with breakfast. F/A not as good but better than most. Ditto with jackets and pre-flight drink although she wasn’t as vigilant after meal service was done. Snack basket did come out mid-flight and we were given a “last call” about 45 mins before landing. Breakfast: cereal/fruit tray, silver dollar pancakes, unidentified omelet. I had the omelet, which was cheese, as I’d expected. It was fine and warm. Breakfast came all at once instead of the fruit first followed by the omelet. Pancakes were next to me and I was impressed with how many there were (maybe 6?). We arrived 35 mins early!

BUT…the aircraft was disgusting. The pillows on the outbound were pre-wrinkled (ie: used!) for your convenience. The monitor on the outbound flight went back and forth between color and black and white during the movie. Pax in D&F seats had no audio. Pen marks were on seatbacks and the cocktail and meal trays had not been cleaned in a while. The whole galley/entrance area with its white walls was grimey. The truncated first class of 8 seats combined with the filth was rather depressing. Remember when the 757 was a great ride? They still board mid-cabin which is a treat although apparently they’ve stopped the one-time practice of holding up Y pax to let first pax deplane in advance.

Summary: service was excellent, food was good, aircraft was yuck. It gives a product you won’t get on SW when going to LAS but it wasn’t impressive. I kept thinking about European travelers who might come over to PHL and connect to LAS as part of *A. What would they think of our dirty planes with malfunctioning IFE?
