I need to know how much time we will need to transfer from Rome's cruise port to FCO. If the ship docks at 5 AM, and the flight leaves at 11 AM, will that be enough time to get to the airport and make the transfer?

I vote no. There can be horrible traffic around the airport, the last two times we have flown out of Rome we lost 90 minutes due to traffic driving in and an hour on the airport shuttle because of an accident on the airport roads. Lucky us, we were stuck right behind it and they would not let anybody off.

Plus, you don't know when you will get off, just because the ship docks at 5 there is still the unloading and clearing, etc.

It is possible but it is also risky

It's way too 'iffy' to count on making that flight. You should be at FCO at least 3 hours before your flight, as well. You don't mention the number of passengers on your ship. If it's one of the huge ones, that will take longer. And you can't rule out a strike or work slowdown. Do you have other options?

Thanks all
I will change my flights and spend a night in FCO near the airport.

Docking time does not equal your disembarkation time. Ship can dock at 5am but need port clearance to start disembark. 2pm is my rule of thumb for Italy. Some port to airport is more efficient but none of them is in Italy.

For me and my party the best EU cruise port for airport transfer is BCN.

We love the Hotel Seccy ( http://seccyhotel.hotelinroma.com/ ), it's like ten minutes from the airport. It's a great place to stay overnight for a morning flight. It was very reasonable too, but we were off season.

They do transfers both to the airport and into Rome if you want to visit.

I would recommend taking the train from the port. It's really cheap and not affected by traffic.

Barcelona is very easy. Southampton is even easier, IMHO. Just 6 miles from port to airport.

I agree that an 11am departure is iffy.

You should be at FCO at least 3 hours before your flight, as well.

Please post where that information comes from. I totally disagree. Plus, how can you post such a sentence not even knowing where the OP is flying to? If flying FCO to TLV it might be good to be there 3 hours ahead, but FCO to FRA or FCO to MXP or FCO to JFK can be way less.

Thank you for pointing out I missed some important information. However, it's my rule of thumb (USAir FCO>PHL advises this) Sometimes gates are closed early, etc. I would rather wait in a comfortable lounge than bite my nails in a potentially pokey taxi. You are right, however.

We flew into Rome's Airport (Leonardo di Vinci airport) which is located about 25 km down the Tiber River from Rome itself. It is located in Ostia (the ruins in ancient Ostia are well worth a day to see).

But Ostia is not the modern container port/cruise port for Rome. That is in Citivecchia, about 50 miles up the coast from Ostia. It is a long, long cab ride to the Airport.

Actually, if you use a private transfer service (I've used and recommended RomeCabs for years), an 11AM flight from FCO is not too difficult. The cruise lines do start disembarkation quite early at Civi, and understand that most international flights to the US depart between 11-12. I've often made that transfer, as have my clients, and while it's tight, it's definitely not uncomfortably so.

i'm doing rome cabs and trying to make a 1130 flight in begining of june, so i hope I make it. I'm traveling business class back so hopefully that will help me get through security.

I should be able to get off the boat pretty early, we booked a suite so that we could have early disembarkation

From my experience you'll not only have no problem, you'll be sitting in the (usually rather horrible) lounge wondering why you were even worried about it and why you got up so early.

Listen to what RomeCabs says about your schedule - they're definitely the pros and will steer you right (pardon the pun).

Now I am a little nervous. My ship,RCI's Mariner, docks at 5AM. My flight is at 1PM.
Haven't decided on transport yet. RCI charges $92 PP. Train is not direct. Hiring a private shared shuttle sounds good but is the most work
arranging and getting others interested.

No way we are staying another day. May just swallow and pay the $184.:)

(BTW - heard about this site from Cruise Critic)

For that amount of money, you can hire a private transport. I use RomeCabs.com.

That's what I think but it seems like more work and stress. I am still deciding.
Frankly if we can hook into someone elses shuttle plans, that would be the best. We will see.
thanx:)

No need to be nervous, especially with a 1P departure. What is your ship and sailing date and I'll double check RCCL's earliest departure time from FCO for you. Most are at 10:30A, and that's using their busses, not the much more efficient private transfer options.

I've also had no issues whatsoever arranging shared shuttles on CruiseCritic in the roll call threads. Almost always seems to be someone, even right up to sailing, who comes in looking to share excursions, transfers, etc.

For the July 11 sailing, the official RCCL "earliest departure" time for their transfers is a flight not earlier than 11A. In case you were wondering, one-way transfer to FCO through RCCL is $91/person, and transfers with RomeCabs for 2 people are 130E.

Hope that helps!

It's 130 Euros for 2 people from the port to the airport. Easy Peasy.

Even at 2 people, it's on par with the cruise line cost, plus you're in a comfy Mercedes and not waiting for everyone on a bus.

Join Cruise Critic, find the Roll all for your cruise and See if others have flights around the same time. You can then share the cost of the transfer. I would bet there are a lot of people heading to the airport for flights around the same time.
