Hi all,

I'll be heading up to BOS from NYC to start a weekend trip to SAN on a Saturday. My flight doesn't leave til 1:30pm on Saturday.

I've been to BOS on for work & then it was usually a fly-in-fly-out stay for a night at most kind of deal.

I work in NYC & was planning on eiither taking a morning train up on Saturday (getting to BOS train station around 11:30 & then just cabbing to BOS) or (preferred) taking the train up after work on Friday & getting into BOS train station around 10pm or midnight depending on if I take Acela or not (only about $50 more at this point, so may be worth it? I've never taken Acela), spending the night in a hotel & getting to the airport aroud noon.

Any thoughts as to which would be a better schedule. It's late May, so I feel like a morning walking near the water front area could be fun before going to the airport. Any Saturday monrning suggestions?

Thanks!

I think you're fine with either scenario, and a Saturday morning walk in May should be quite refreshing. Personally, I love walking around Atlantic Avenue in the North End, but you could just take the freedom trail also.

I've got a weekend meeting in BOS in the fall and I think what I'll end up doing is taking Acela from NYP after work on Friday and get off at the Back Bay station; the Marriott Copley Place is adjacent to the station, I'm told.

It's not near the water or the airport, but is close to mass transit options that will get you there.

Just a thought.

There are numerous hotels directly adjacent to Back Bay Station, including the Marriott Copley Place, the Westin Copley Place, the Colonnade, and the Back Bay Hotel, and numerous others within a short walk, including the Sheraton Boston, the Hilton Back Bay, the Four Seasons, the Mandarin Oriental, and the Taj.

The most convenient hotel to South Station is the Intercontinental, but there are many others convenient to the Silver Line bus, which operates between South Station and Logan Airport, including a Westin, a Renaissance, and the Seaport Hotel.

I'd take the train from NYC to Back Bay Station, have a late night dinner at Coda (around the corner from Back Bay Station) or elsewhere in the South End (the neighborhood adjacent to the Back Bay; easily walkable), stay at a nice Back Bay Hotel, have a nice Saturday morning breakfast in the Back Bay or the South End, and then head to Logan.

Blumie's suggestion isn't a bad one.

A different plan to consider is taking the train to So Station, then walking 5 mins down Atlantic Ave to the Boston Harbor Hotel (or 5 mins more to the Marriott). Dinner in the North End. Then on Saturday take the water shuttle to Logan -- one of the few remaining joys of an air trip from BOS.

(The water shuttle to Logan used to depart from Rowe's Wharf, behind the Boston Harbor Hotel. I haven't used it for a few years -- there's an oversight -- and I'm not sure if the departure point has moved.)

What about train to South Station and Silver Line to one of the hotels in the Seaport District? They are usually much cheaper on weekends and there are several good restaurants down there now. You can depart for Logan on the Silver Line the next day.

Interesting tips all - thanks! I wasn't aware that there was a water shuttle - that could be kind of fun as well. Thanks!

I have a similar situation as the OP except that mine is a mileage run trip, therefore lowering cost (within reason) is a consideration for me. I was thinking of braving a 2:30am train from NYP on the day of flight; but have growing concerns about putting too much strain on my body. I'm considering whether to travel to BOS one day earlier and stay at an airport hotel (since I only need/want a clean bed for the night) - I'm not sure whether to book the Hampton Inn or the Four Points.

So hotels in BOS are extremely expensive (more than some NYC hotels for a Friday night stay).

I ended up cashing out 8k AGR points for the 6pm Acela train & getting a great 1 night price in a hostel (private room, shared bathroom) just 4 blocks from the Back Bay Station - http://www.40berkeley.com/ - $59+taxes advance purchase rate comes out to about $68.

(FWIW, mediocre reviews - so I'l have flip-flops for the shower & possibly even a sleeping sheet - but I'm confident I've been in worse places & have spent many a night in airports, tents, and cars when traveling - so for the price, paid, I'm willing to accept the TripAdvisor reviews).
