They are indeed done at your first port of entry - in your case JNB. You will collect luggage, clear customs, walk out of the international terminal and re-check luggage. If the re-check area is understaffed and slow (usually the case) just take your trolley up the first escalators you see and check in at the domestic check-in desks on the top floor.

2 hours is a comfortable connection time. MCT at JNB is 90 mins for international to domestic.

thank you kindly for the concise reply.
Do you have any knowledge of the greater Durban area? I have 9 days from 16oct2011 to do a road trip(s). Would like to do a circular trip, so as not to cover the same area twice. North to Richards Bay and St. Lucia looks interesting and South to East London and Port Elizabeth might be some good whale watching. My 3rd trip to ZA. 1st 2 trips to CPT area. Any advice?

What you're suggesting sounds like a great option - and be sure to go all the way west to George, at least. Knysna is a personal fave of mine, and has some good B&Bs.

If you like nice digs, consider stopping at Zimbali at the Ballito exit as you head north of Durbs on the N2; I believe it's a Fairmont property now, but wasn't when I was there a few years ago.

Any advice?Sorry for a tardy reply, I've not been on FT for a few weeks. Durban and KZN in general are not areas I know well. I have been to the game parks in the north (Umfolozi, Hluhluwe, St Lucia, etc.) and loved them. Driving south to PE is quite an ambitious trip and large parts of it are inland as there is no coast road in the Transkei region. Although the scenery is pretty, driving is made more tricky than usual in ZA (and that's saying something!) by the frequent presence of goats and cows straying onto the roads. More scenic, as mentioned by TravelinWilly is the Garden Route from PE to Cape Town. The best bits are the aroung George, Wilderness and Knysna.

From Durban another option is the Drakensberg for some spectacular mountain scenery.
