Good to hear that. I would like to go there again. The only time I went there was on school trip many years ago. Is the improvement recent, or has it been getting better gradually for a while? GUWonder Apr 19, 11, 4:21 am I have been invited to check out the brand new Vivanta by Taj Hotels overlooking Dal Lake there this summer. I will be doing so. Has any FTer checked it out this year? On one of my trips to SXR in 2010, I was told that the then under construction property was seeking to tie up with one of a few brands, Indian or otherwise. In 2010 when I was there on yet another trip, I was made aware of more about the property's status and ended up disappointed that they hadn't tied up with a brand whose points and status I have in abundance. :D 2010 was worse than was initially expected by many. 2011 may be better than initially expected by many, but I am not calling it either way. It's been a see-saw ride condition that became a more volatile ride (better and worse) since late in 2007. GUWonder Jun 12, 11, 1:45 pm So far, 2011 has turned out to be much better than expected for tourism flows. The place is packed with tourists again. Even the intra-valley rail line is packed -- mostly with locals -- such that getting a seat on an early Sunday morning train from Srinagar to Anatnag can be pretty much impossible. Did you get to ride the train? GUWonder Jun 13, 11, 1:50 am Did you get to ride the train? I didn't see any chickens on the train :D -- something which I've seen on Indian railways before and in some of the shared "taxis" (usually SUVs with sometimes scary drivers :D) that are usually quite the deal too for travel connecting the state's one capital with the valley's second largest city. If my return at the end of this month or in the first week of next occurs and allows me closer to a week there, then I plan to check out the Taj hotel there. [Time to look into a Taj hotel status match. :D ] One of the runners for the OP-mentioned position -- before it got filled -- had a tragic death in the family a few weeks. An awful tragedy to have a child die before the parents -- something that would have made attending to work more challenging to say the least. Oh yes, losing a child is a terrible tragedy, the worst a parent can go through. The current Chief Secy is my school and college chum (7 years in school and 5 in college). I would love to travel Jammy to Srinagar, when and if the railway is completed. My one and only trip to Kashmir was a long time ago--train to Pathankot and a bus from Pathankot to Srinagar, with an overnight in Kud/Khud, or Batote just before the Banihal tunnel llauland Jun 14, 11, 8:44 am Dear all, I am new to the site.........I find it very interesting thus far. To get a car park permit in the center of Gulmarg itself requires a hotel stay overnight nowadays right? It did in the last couple of years as in the day time during the summer rush, Gulmarg can get packed with charter bus tourists just stopping by for part of the day. Highland Park is still a respite from that rush. The Naidu-Abdullah family don't seem to have invested in the property to make it as good as it could be again. Sad state of affairs. llauland Jun 15, 11, 9:38 pm To get a car park permit in the center of Gulmarg itself requires a hotel stay overnight nowadays right? We will have more than ample parking space at the resort.........I'll hold a special parking place for you GUWonder Jul 11, 12, 9:57 am Just got around to commenting about the (Vivanta by) Taj hotel here. FWIW it is now my property of choice in the city in terms of quality of rooms, hotel F&B selection and views. [It seems to have become more popular than the (fmr. Oberoi/Intercontinental, now Lalit) Grand Palace hotel for foreign military personnel and defense contractors as well.] Tourism seems to be quite strong overall in the area, what with at least 12 flights a day from just DEL, with service by at least 6 carriers, and lots of houseboats and various other hotels having reasonably high occupancy. I didn't care to figure out the occupancy levels of the Taj and Grand Palace hotels here but they have rooms available without issue. Traffic in the city and to get between SXR and tourist highlights beyond the city is awful during way too many hours of the day -- and that really removes a lot of the charm the place used to have. |
